POMPIDOO BAG REVIEW www.pompidoo.com Until recently I wasn’t fully aware of the availability of such stylish camera bags for women, until I received the opportunity to review this refined camera accessory. The Palermo Camera Bag by Pompidoo is a very stylish and functional way to carry your camera equipment to any occasion. Whether I’m out taking photos, or having a milkshake with my family, this bag plays it’s part perfectly. When I’m out taking photos, I love the fact that this Palermo bag doesn’t look like a typical camera bag. As well as looking...

Pentax has refreshed its entry level DSLR lineup with the announcement of the K-50 and K-500. The K50 is an update of the K-30, featuring less controversial styling and slightly tweaked processing, helping it offer a maximum ISO of 51,200. The K-500, meanwhile, gets most of the K-50’s features – the main loss being...

Pin It For a photographer, skills in family portraits are are essential and are usually the bread and butter for up and coming photographers. Looking at the history of photography, one of the first popular uses the camera was not for abstract art, or photographing the family pet, but for photographing people and their families. Because of the expense and difficulty of each photo taken, they became masters at getting things right the first time and being able to fit in as many people as possible into the frame. In order to hone in on the small things that make a...

Facing The Challenge: Building A Responsive Web Application By Lars Kappert June 12th, 2013 Apps, Responsive Design, Techniques 3 Comments We are talking and reading a lot about responsive Web design (RWD) these days, but very little attention is given to Web applications. Admittedly, RWD still has to be ironed out. But many of us believe it to be a strong concept, and it is here to stay. So, why don’t we extend this topic to HTML5-powered applications? Because responsive Web applications (RWAs) are both a huge opportunity and a big challenge, I wanted to dive in. Building a RWA is more...

My view is that focus by wire will never be as good as mechanical focus, it lacks feedback that you get with the “old way”. Same for power zoom, both these technologies are flashbacks to the 90’s they’re here for video users, not stills photographers. The photo industry does not always take the road that it should, we’ve seen this in the past.

Seems like something just up my alley. A little bit thick for my taste; however, considering the zoom range this is a given (and something future generations will easily improve on for easier marketing). The first reviews suggest the image quality is lacking for a dedicated photo-phone, which is saddening (a proper price could mitigate this). And for those comparing it to the future Nokia EOS and it’s loss-less digital zoom – it can only do 3x zoom, so a direct comparison isn’t possible, really (different tools for different needs). The ergonomics could seriously...

It is now pretty clear that what you can do with a real estate photography drone will pretty much depend on what state you doing it in, not so much what the FAA ends up doing. The FAA is taking so long every state in the US will have it’s own state law before the FAA acts. Forty-three US states are considering legislation to regulate the use of drones. Just recently both Oregon and Texas state legislatures passed bills that would outlaw photography or video from small unmanned drones. Here are the details for Oregon and Texas: Oregon House Bill 2710: Commercial use of unmanned aircraft...

Balance is a very important aspect in photography. If you are aiming to create a balanced photo, then there is one key that is often overlooked. The corners of an image. Our eyes have a natural tendency to want to dart off of the sides of a photograph when we look at it and so, when we can, we need to use the edges to fight this natural urge. Â Putting elements in the corners will stop the eyes so that they move back into the scene. When you are framing a photograph look into each corner to see what is there. Â It can often help to cut off elements. Â A hint of a...

Front-End Ops By Alex Sexton June 11th, 2013 Web Design, Workflow 2 Comments When a team builds a complex application, there is often a common breakdown of roles. Specifically on the back end, there are database engineers, application engineers and operations engineers, or something close to this. In recent years, more and more application logic is being deferred to the client side. For some reason, though, operations folks aren’t going with it. I recently wrote an article on “Deploying JavaScript Applications.†It was largely well received, and I was happy with the content, but one...

by Lynsey Peterson. When I first started doing professional photography, newborn babies were the coveted prize. An adorable sleeping creature that would look cute no matter what? Sign me up! Let’s put that baby in a stockpot! In a basket! Wait! –A headband that looks like a flower! In a field of flowers! With butterflies! And maybe a big gift box bow! Then I realized that Anne Geddes is the landlord of that entire market. And that it’s rare for a portrait client to actually want a picture of their baby in a stockpot. What people do want is a picture of their...

With the summer coming up and different celebrations you may have the opportunity to photograph some fireworks. If you’re in the USA you have the 4th of July, in Canada July 1st. In many other places you can find fireworks festivals or competitions even, or special occasions when fireworks may be set off including weddings, New Years Day or course and of course at Disneyland! So here’s a few tips to help you photograph fireworks. The biggest thing to remember is that it’s all about practice, experimentation, and the following mantra (say it with me!)...

Belgian photographer Max Pinckers has won this year’s City of Levallois Photography Award for his series The Fourth Wall.
Pinckers’s work was chosen from 229 applications from 38 countries and will be shown at Photo Levallois Festival in France this autumn.Â
The Fourth Wall, a self-published book, explores the impact Bollywood has on wider society (see BJP January 2013.)
“Nowhere else is there such devotion to cinema as in India,” Pinckers told BJP in January. “This fictional world seeps into reality and influences everyday life, dictating...

As expected, Apple revealed iOS 7 today at the 24th annual World Wide Developers Conference, and there’s plenty for mobile photography enthusiasts to be excited about. We shared our wishlist for Apple additions that could improve iPhone photography last week — and we’re happy to report that some of them even came true. While Apple made some big announcements about its iTunes Radio streaming music service, the new OS X Mavericks, a new line of MacBook Airs and a Mac Pro that will support 4K displays, we paid closest attention to Apple’s revamped mobile...

Just Posted:Â Our review of the Canon EOS 700D / EOS Rebel T5i. The 700D may be a near-identical twin of the short-lived EOS 650D, but it’s still a worthy option for novice DSLR upgraders, combining high image quality and an articulated LCD with a comprehensive touchscreen interface. This is an area that we Web developers have only recently started looking at more closely, and it’s important because it could have an impact on your user engagement and user experience. Various polls that I’ve done indicate that roughly half of real estate photographers use small flashes in their shoots. I feel particularly qualified to talk about how people try to avoid using flash because even though I purchased my first flash (an SB-26) for real estate photography work in about 1995 I managed to avoid learning how to use it effectively until early 2008 when I met Scott Hargis at a workshop we did together in Seattle. Everything I know about flash I learned from Scott. I was so impressed with Scott’s system for Lighting Interiors with small flashes that I convinced...

It was love at first sight! Totally smitten! Pulled the P520 out of its unassuming box and there it was: a gleaming vision in deep cherry red. At the outset, the red base colour and overlaid control ID texts picked out in white made everything abundantly clear … much better than the usual white text on black! And what a piece of kit it is. Hitting off with a 42x zoom that moves from a 35 SLR equivalent of 24mm at the wide end and slipping in to a tele of 1000mm, it’s quite a piece of glass, although I found the stabiliser to be wanting when I handheld the...

Some things seems pretty straight forward and like they’re common knowledge, but I’ve run into this a few times with my students that feel embarrassed to ask what all the numbers on the lens mean. There is no reason to feel stupid or embarrassed if you don’t know this, it is sometimes confusing. So I’m going to run through them one by one. Common settings seen on newer digital lenses FOCAL LENGTH If you have a zoom lens you will have a ring that turns to zoom in and out and it will also indicate what focal length you are currently set to. For example of...

Clown Car Technique: Solving Adaptive Images In Responsive Web Design By Estelle Weyl June 2nd, 2013 CSS, Responsive Web Design, Techniques 32 Comments Adaptive images are the current hot topic in conversations about adaptive and responsive Web design. Why? Because no one likes any of the solutions thus far. New elements and attributes are being discussed as a solution for what is, for most of us, a big headache: to provide every user with one image optimized for their display size and resolution, without wasting time, memory or bandwidth with a client-side solution. We have foreground and...

The State Of Responsive Web Design By Stéphanie Walter May 29th, 2013 Responsive Design, Techniques 87 Comments Responsive Web design has been around for some years now, and it was a hot topic in 2012. Many well-known people such as Brad Frost and Luke Wroblewski have a lot of experience with it and have helped us make huge improvements in the field. But there’s still a whole lot to do. In this article, we will look at what is currently possible, what will be possible in the future using what are not yet standardized properties (such as CSS Level 4 and HTML5 APIS), and what still needs to...

Eros Peterson pointed out a CBCNews article this morning that the Penthouse at Vancouver’s Fairmont Pacific Rim recently sold for a record $25 million. While this is interesting that Canadian condo sales are on a roll, I think a more interesting aspect to this story for real estate people is that Malcolm Hasman, Vancouver’s top listing agent, is the listing agent on this property. If you look at Malcolm’s listing page for this condo you notice that all 30 of the listing photos are shot at twilight. Not only that, but if you look at Malcolm’s website every listing photo for every...

A while back I did a post on the YN-560-II, and how it is a good all around manually triggered flash that you can use if you are using Scott Hargis’s Lighting Interiors manual flash technique. For details see Lighting Interiors e-book or Scott’s Lighting Video series. The YN-560-III that was introduced in January of 2013 is a slight refinement of the YN-560-II that has a built-in 2.4Ghz trigger compatible with the RF602/603 triggers. That is, when you are using Scott’s manual flash system you need to trigger at least one flash wirelessly if you are going to get the flash off your...

A Guest Post by Lithuanian Photographer Tadas Naujokaitis. Birds are very interesting creatures, but it’s not so easy to photograph them. Wild birds usually don’t pose where you want and, moreover, it’s often difficult to get close enough to take quality pictures. But if you know some basics of bird photography, it becomes much easier to capture amazing moments of the birds’ life. Equipment It’s not necessary to have an expensive camera of lens, however the proper equipment lets to take bird photos easier. Lens Most birds are quite shy, so you need at...

This week we published a tutorial on using converging lines in the composition of your photos so today we thought it might make a good theme for our weekly challenge. So – your challenge is to grab your camera and head out to find some converging lines to shoot – and then to share those photos with us. You can see some examples of converging lines in shots in the post from earlier in the week but as you get out and about you’re sure to see them all around you – once you start looking you’ll be amazed how many they are. By Andrew S. Gibson – the author of Understanding Exposure: Perfect Exposure on Your EOS Camera (currently 36% off at SnapnDeals). Over the years that I’ve worked as a photography writer I’ve noticed that people keep asking the same questions about exposure on their EOS cameras. One of the most common is why doesn’t the camera doesn’t get the exposure right every time? This is a reasonable question. Modern digital SLRs are advanced machines with built-in microprocessors that can handle complex calculations. So just why do they get exposure wrong? Part of...

Minimalism is a very subjective concept in the art world. The Webster dictionary defines it as follows: A style or technique that is characterized by extreme spareness and simplicity. Some love it, others hate it, but no one seems to be indifferent. Many artists thrive in the openness of the concept, others have a problem with the lack of definition and direction. Many of us are drawn to ‘less is more’ with simple lines, geometric patterns, strong shadows, contrasting colors, lone subjects, etc. For others, deciding what to leave out of the frame to make a...

The app creates a unique texture and exposure on a black and white image. Koloid takes a little longer than most camera apps but it also gives the satisfaction of using something other than a...

VII Photo’s director Stephen Mayes has resigned effective 30 May. Nick Papadopoulos, the agency’s international director, will serve as interim CEO until a successor is named, the agency has announced today.
“It’s very tough to leave this great, talented team, but I feel the need to pursue new creative projects that will combine my experience and passion in many different parts of the photographic world,” says Mayes in a press statement. “It’s been a privilege to work with the world’s greatest photojournalists for the past five years,...
