Building The New Financial Times Web App: A Case Study By Wilson Page May 23rd, 2013 CSS, Responsive Web Design, Techniques 12 Comments When the mockups for the new Financial Times application hit our desks in mid-2012, we knew we had a real challenge on our hands. Many of us on the team (including me) swore that parts of interface would not be possible in HTML5. Given the product team’s passion for the new UI, we rolled up our sleeves and gave it our best shot. We were tasked with implementing a far more challenging product, without compromising the reliable, performant experience that...

The PFRE jury has voted Anders Carlson of Kona, HI the PFRE photographer for May. Anders’s winning photograph is on the right. Click on it for a full size image. Anders is a second time winner. He won last May when we had this same theme. One of the jurors made this comment about this photo: Most of the photos in this months contest suffer from poor framing, poor lighting, and were composed too wide, which de-emphasizes the view, contrary to this month’s theme. This photo has nice, tight framing and is well-lit, although a little more ambient light inside might help fill in the shadows...

We’ve just added three studio comparison pages to our previously-published preview of the Pentax MX-1. The MX-1 is Pentax’s flagship compact camera, and something of a departure for the manufacturer, offering a fast F1.8-2.5 zoom lens, full manual control and a high-class, metal body, to compete with more established...

There’s no question that Lightroom is a powerful piece of photo processing software, but due to that power sometimes it’s not as easy to wrap our heads around everything it has to offer, that’s in part why I started my Let’s Edit YouTube series a weekly segment in which I share my own editing workflow for viewers to learn from. After starting this series one of the most commonly asked questions was to go into more detail on how the sharpening tools in Lightroom work. Sharpening in Lightroom is broken down into four different sliders – Amount, Radius,...

Animated flip books have been around for nearly 145 years. With just a little thumb-work, these books allowed you to view a few seconds worth of animation. Now, a new concept camera known as the Gifty allows you to record video and print a flip book instantly. The Gifty, designed by student Jiho Jang for his thesis project, records...

Much of the fallout surrounding Flickr’s massive updates this Monday continues to center around changes to Pro user accounts. Oh, and then there was that thing Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer said: “There’s no such thing as Flickr Pro today because [with so many people taking photographs] there’s really no such thing as professional photographers anymore.†Along will significant visual changes throughout the photo sharing and storage site, Flickr introduced a new account structure Monday that eliminated the $25-per-year-unlimited-storage Flickr Pro option. Instead, accounts...

“it does not give you the freedom to randomly change the English grammar rules” What grammar rules are they changing? Gigantic, giant, ginger, ginseng, gist, giraffe. Gem, generate, germ, gel, gentle…. When followed by an “e”, “i”, or “y” it is often pronounced soft. But it can be either hard or soft and its determined by convention.

Designing CSS Layouts With Flexbox Is As Easy As Pie By David Storey May 22nd, 2013 CSS, Layouts, Tools 3 Comments This article is an updated excerpt of the chapter “Restyle, Recode, Reimagine With CSS3″ from our Smashing Book #3, written by Lea Verou and David Storey. — Ed. Flexible box layout (or flexbox) is a new box model optimized for UI layout. As one of the first CSS modules designed for actual layout (floats were really meant mostly for things such as wrapping text around images), it makes a lot of tasks much easier, or even possible at all. Flexbox’s repertoire includes the...

Back a couple of weeks ago Vince DeStefano of Melbourne told us about his new UAV. As you can imagine, a $3500 UAV is not something that you want to just throw in the boot without some kind of protection and of course most UAVs don’t come with a nice carrying case. So Vince built his own custom carrying case out of parts you can buy from penn-elcom.com. Vince says: It’s relatively cheap and easy to build a high end road case for your equipment and may be a good alternative to commercial case for guys just starting out. For example, this  case in the photo cost a little under $220 (1...

> Photographers with larger hands may also find the ergonomics > of the E-PL5 a better fit than the decidedly ‘Mini’ E-PM2 Hm. Camerasize shows they are practically identical in size: http://camerasize.com/compare/#387,382 If you look at the back, I can’t see what E-PL5 offers that is more ergonomic to people with large hands (and I am interested because I do have large hands).

Cape St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve is about a one hour drive south on Highway 100 from the Marine Atlantic ferry terminus of Argentia. The drive to the reserve itself is fascinating and provides many opportunities for images of the rugged maritime coastline, particularly around Ship Cove and Gooseberry Cove. Should your departure point be the international airport at St. John’s, the drive will take about three hours as you travel inland via Salmonier Line, and south across the Avalon Peninsula to St. Bride’s. Should you want the most scenic drive from St....

Creating a reflection using Photoshop is one of those things that at first glance looks really hard, but really isn’t, once you break down the steps (just light Light Painting which I covered in another two part series). In this article I’m going to demystify creating a reflection, a technique that works particularly well on images with open pavement, and HDR processed images which tend to make the pavement look wet already. We’re going to learn how to go from this . . . To this! In less than 10 minutes! I recently showed one my HDR classes how to do this,...

When homes are damaged, often the most important items cannot be replaced. For victims of fire, floods and other natural disasters, family photos are among the worst things to lose. Operation Photo Rescue brings together victims with professional photo editors to turn damaged images back into clear memories. Operation Photo Rescue was started after Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf of Mexico in 2005. Since then, the organization has repaired more than 9,000 photos, providing free restoration of photos damaged by natural disasters. After Hurricane Sandy, Operation Photo Rescue...

Mobile UX ResearchExploring Ten Fundamental Aspects Of M-Commerce Usability By Christian Holst May 21st, 2013 Usability, User Research 4 Comments Everyone is talking about mobile. Some e-commerce websites are venturing into it. Mobile commerce (also known as “m-commerceâ€) has immense potential, exhibiting a 86% growth rate and hitting $25 billion in 2012 (set to reach $86 billion by 2016, according to eMarketer). It’s also a whole new platform, with new interaction methods and usage contexts that introduce a host of limitations and pitfalls to watch out for when designing and running...

Today Flickr implemented their new design. The three main things that is different are: The interface has been updated. Everyone gets a free terabyte of storage. It allows you to share in full resolution. Upload once and send to any screen. If  you want a more detailed look at the new features have a look at Ken Yeung’s review over at thenextweb.com I like the look of the new design. Larger thumbnails, black backgrounds. Looks much more modern. I joined flicker in 2007, and this is the first time anything on flickr.com has been changed since 2007. Almost exactly a year ago Matt Honan over...

Canadian photojournalist – Ted Grant – is quoted as saying: “When you photograph people in color, you photograph their clothes. But when you photograph people in Black and white, you photograph their souls!†This quote often comes to mind when talking about portraiture and I thought it might make an interesting discussion starter. Do Ted’s words resonate with you?

A Guest Post by Lynsey Peterson. Nothing freaks me out like props.  Every time I see a picture of flower girls holding an empty frame that is outlining a bride and groom kissing in the distance, I die a little inside.  Whenever I am subjected to a photo that attempts to bring in a letter jacket and a football and a casual I’m-just-hanging-out-here-in-my-letter-jacket-holding-my-football expression, I try to remember that I am terrible at making coffee and therefore cannot give-up photography immediately and go get an application at Starbucks.  We have come...

Our friends and collaborators over at DxOMark have recently been looking into how lenses score on specific cameras, and the latest model they’ve examined is the Nikon D600. In a three-part article published at the end of last week, they investigate how 70 lenses from Carl Zeiss, Nikon, Samyang, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina measure...

Well, clicking the check box, in Software manager, is pretty simple too; but let’s not be assumptive. Perhaps he didn’t understand, ufraw stands in the place of Camera Raw component; before Photoshop. 16-bit never was a problem for Gimp, with ufraw before it. I think ufraw is absolutely the best tool, for Raw, once you honestly read it’s web page, and set to your camera(s). You see, it’s different, and does not jump out at you, and its not for using it, without simply setting a camera profile. Many ufraw camera profiles are already down-loadable, and you can...

Last week Andy in Aurora, CO asked me the following: “I’m looking into buying a new PC. Have you done any research or polls on what system requirements work best for real estate processing applications. I’m thinking about something that would allow me to run Photomatix and Lightroom at the same time, and still do some uploading of images in the background. Recommendations on processor, video/graphics card, and RAM would be helpful. Also, ideas on pricing out such a system.†Here is my answer: Essential: Don’t skimp on the amount of RAM you get. In the overall scheme of things...

You’ve probably noticed that PFRE is running faster. It’s hard to miss. Starting late Friday US West Coast time (Tijuana time) we moved the PFRE blog to a higher performance server. Things have been slowing down for the last year or so as our traffic has been increasing but the thing that really made our old server’s speed noticeable was when we redesigned the real estate photographers directory. Cristi, our web developer pointed out how bad the performance on the old sever was and help me move to this new server. There are still performance improvements that we are going to make in...

Today Joe Decker shares some tips on wide angle photography. One of the first lens purchases aspiring landscape photographers typically made is a wide or super-wide lens, anything (in full-frame 35mm terms) from 24mm on down, and with good reason, wides offer photographers the ability to capture the sweeping vistas of the natural landscape. But they can also be a challenge to use effectively, it’s all to easy to end up with a wide-angle shot that lacks the power and grandeur we felt when we were shooting. In this article, I’ll explain why that’s so often the...

vhelemos I have used GIMP for 10+ years. Power = PhotoShop like. GIMP does everything, and is easily extensible through plugins. This article does a fair job pointing that out. Color Depth = Current version of GIMP is 8-bit, but the development version (which you can download and compile from the GIMP website) is 16-bit, and the next stable version will also be 16-bit. User Interface = clunky, often complained about. To me, it is fine, but I’m used to it. A “Photoshop-like” interface (one window) has been created, which the article also points out. Raw support = must...
