VII Photo’s director Stephen Mayes has resigned effective 30 May. Nick Papadopoulos, the agency’s international director, will serve as interim CEO until a successor is named, the agency has announced today.

vhelemos I have used GIMP for 10+ years. Power = PhotoShop like. GIMP does everything, and is easily extensible through plugins. This article does a fair job pointing that out. Color Depth = Current version of GIMP is 8-bit, but the development version (which you can download and compile from the GIMP website) is 16-bit, and the next stable version will also be 16-bit. User Interface = clunky, often complained about. To me, it is fine, but I’m used to it. A “Photoshop-like” interface (one window) has been created, which the article also points out. Raw support = must...

Mark, while I can certainly try my best to see your point as you approach this from a pro perspective, the statistics you put here are kind of curious, I am not sure where you got them! Remember the old rule about message boards, especially on a site like this where we are just commenting below news or an article: the majority of people will not post anything, and rather will mostly lurk or just enjoy it without feeling compelled to type here incessantly as some of us do. So, between you as a pro, and I as a total amateur, we are not necessarily representative of the bulk of...

Introduction The following is an excerpt from the SLR Lounge Lightroom Workflow System Workshop on DVD, a system designed to increase your post production speed by 5 to 10 times! Click here to learn more. In this article, we are going to talk about creating a develop preset that you would like to apply to all of your images when they are first imported into Lightroom. Although Adobe’s RAW image processing is extremely powerful, one common complaint is that your images may look flat and colorless at first. Often photographers will lament how beautiful their...

I had noticed this lighting scheme earlier in the song and missed it, focusing elsewhere. But when guitarist Brendt Allman went into his solo, I waited to see if it would happen again. Sure enough, it did. EOS-1D Mark IV, EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS II. ISO 3200, 1/200 f/2.8. A few years ago, I managed to start working with one of my favorite groups of musicians, a progressive heavy metal band from Pennsylvania called Shadow Gallery. This has led to me collaborating with them in a number of ways. I did some publicity photos for them, shot a music video (in another...

DigiKam will run on Windows, though it has the serious glitch of creating tiff files that are next to impossible to delete. Rawtherapee, at least on my Windows7 machine, can only see raws in odd folders and then doesn’t do a good job of extraction. Good of you to call attention to Corel’s Aftershot, it’s something DPReview just ignored when they did the raw extraction software roundup a few months back. And I see it’s still being ignored. There’s also PhotoNinja, from PictureCode, it’s good at extracting raws but it’s a resource hog and slow....

Preface:  There will be no images included in this entry. The point is to have the reader start reviewing the work of  great stock shooters. Stock photography is work and part of that work is research.  In this entry I have dropped names and agencies.  Now the research begins. Check out Part I of this series here. -DW Stock photography has been going through an evolutionary process since the beginnings of photography as a popular hobby, and continues to be an industry in search of itself. The foundation is well established, but the end means is being...

Case StudyTypographic Design Patterns And Current Practices (2013 Edition) By Jan Constantin May 17th, 2013 Trends, Typography, Web Design 5 Comments Good typography has always been a defining aspect of effective Web design, and this holds true especially for websites in which the emphasis is on presenting a large amount of content — specifically, articles, news and stories. Whether for a magazine or international newspaper, the designer of any website that distributes a lot of content has always had to consider typographic details as seriously and thoroughly as a print designer would. A Beginner’s GuideMigrating A Website To WordPress Is Easier Than You Think By Jonathan Wold May 15th, 2013 Techniques, Themes, Tips 26 Comments Now powering over 17% of the Web, WordPress is increasingly becoming the content management system (CMS) of choice for the average user. But what about websites built with an outdated CMS or without a CMS at all? Does moving to WordPress mean starting over and losing all the time, energy and money put into the current website? Nope! Easy…I shoot with a Sony Alpha a580, it’s not a mirrorless or SLT, in fact is the last traditional DSLR from Sony with OVF and it’s a beauty to shoot in Live View…I found myself shooting, more and more in Live View cause it’s that great…plus in manual mode you kind of have a “focus peaking” mode on the spot you’re focusing on…is very easy to focus manually…its another thing that keeps me on Sony’s camp right now, a swivel and a great Live View = many more options and less compromising, something that the a77 and...

One of the more interesting Kickstarter projects we’ve seen lately is XiStera, an all-in-one smartphone tool that promises to do just about everything the mobile photographer on the go might require. This smartphone gadget serves as a lens adapter, stand, tripod mount, headphone wrap and stylus for your iPhone 5. It also works as a bottle opener and key chain, and can attach an optional LED light to your phone. Watch the XiStera in action:Â With the XiStera already accomplishing above and beyond its $19,000 Kickstarter goal, its creators have dreamt up three more stretch goals...

Photo by peter bowers Most Pro landscape photographers recommend shooting either at (or around) dawn or dusk in order to capture their scene in the ‘golden hours’ when the light is at it’s best (in fact some will rarely shoot at any other time of day). However, one of the problems associated with shooting at this time of day is that while the sky will often have enough light in it the foreground of your images can sometimes end up being a little underexposed and featureless. One way to get around underexposed foregrounds is to include water in that area of...

1. Get up Early The best light to capture most kinds of subjects is in the golden hours- one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset (depend off course on where you are on the glove). So get up early to get that amazing photo opportunities, while all the other tourists are still asleep. 2. Do your research Don’t leave it to chance and learn as much as you can about the place you are about to travel. The more you know, the more “intelligent†your images will be. 3. Learn your Craft Don’t waste your expensive traveling time on learning how to operate...

By now you’ve probably hear or read some rants about the new Adobe Creative Suite Application licensing that Adobe announced last week. If not here is the news in a nutshell (via Forbes.com): In the future Adobe Creative Suite applications like Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro etc. will only be available via Creative Cloud (on a subscription basis). You can subscribe to any one application for $19.99/mo. You can get everything for $49.99/mo. Lightroom 5 will not be a part of this (yet), it will still be available as a standalone application. This is good news for most real estate...

You may question why I selected the Samsung WB250F for review after my less than positive review of the Galaxy, a camera replete with all sorts of problems like dust on the sensor, poor ISO performance and an inordinately long startup time! My reasons: Samsung is now a major player in electronics, especially smart phones and the like, so a reasonably priced device such as this is worthy of attention. The Samsung WB250F has an 18x zoom which begins on a usefully wide 24mm 35 SLR equivalent focal length and reaches out to a 35 SLR equivalent of 432mm. Samsung has...

After attending Nokia’s Lumia 925 launch event in London yesterday, Andy Westlake, our Technical Editor in the UK, had a chance to get his hands on the new device, try it out and take some pictures of and with it. Unfortunately, we were not allowed to keep any of the samples images using the 925’s camera and new 6-element lens. He also had a chance to speak to Juha Alakarhu, the head of Nokia’s imaging department in Finland, and Samuli Hanninen, vice president of Software Program Management for Nokia, about the 925’s new imaging technology and what it...

While you shrug it off as not much of an achievement, I see it differently. One of the smallest compact 35mm cameras with fixed lens in the world was the Minox 35, coming in at 100mm x 61mm x31mm (I believe with the lens cover closed, larger when lens cover is open). It’s lens was a 35mm F/2.8, one stop slower than the RX1’s 35mm F/2. It used a button cell battery and had no onboard flash. The RX1 is 113mm x 65mm x 70mm, with most of that 70mm being just lens. So in inches, a difference of .5″ x .15″ x 1.5″. Now considering that the RX1 also has a larger...

Do you want to make your images more dynamic and aesthetically pleasing? Try looking for curves when you are photographing! Once you start looking for them, you will find them everywhere. Curves make an image easy to look at by leading the viewer’s eye through the frame. It is almost as if the photographer takes the viewer by the hand, draws them into the landscape, and points the way. The viewer’s eyes are compelled to follow the line. Curves are graceful, rhythmic, dynamic and add energy to an image. They can separate or connect elements or simply offer a...
