Alongside the new Motorola-made Nexus 6 smartphone Google has also launched a new Nexus tablet, the 8.9-inch Nexus 9 which is the first HTC-made Nexus device since the original Nexus One in 2010. Despite the different manufacturers the Nexus 9 specifications are equally high-end as those of its smartphone cousin. The new tablet comes with an 8.9-inch IPS LCD display that offers a 2,048 x 1,440 resolution and top-of-the-line interior components.
The brand new Android version 5.0 “Lollipop” is powered by a 64-bit Nvidia Tegra K1 chipset and 2GB of RAM. The Wi-Fi only version will come as 16 or 32GB versions, the LTE model is only available with 32GB storage. On the back an 8MP camera with BSI CMOS sensor and F2.4 aperture should provide decent imaging capabilities for a tablet. On the front you’ll find a 1.6MP/F2.4 unit for the occasional selfie and video-chat. Dual front speaker with HTC’s Boom-Sound technology should provide adequate sound.
The Nexus 9 comes with with a brushed aluminum frame and rubberized back. It weighs 480g and starts at $399 for the 16GB Wi-Fi-only base model. It will be available for pre-order on October 17, store availability and shipments are scheduled for the start of November.
