Film Friday: An introduction to stereoscopy (‘3D’) film photography

For this week’s installment of Film Friday, we’re featuring an article from The Stereoscopy Blog, as shared on 35mmc, that serves as an introduction to stereoscopic photography — oftentimes referred to as as 3D photography. Stereoscopic still life taken with a 120 Sputnik stereo camera After a brief introduction to what The Stereoscopy Blog is about, Rebecca (from The Stereoscopy Blog) breaks down the basics of analog stereoscopic photography: what it is, where it came from, what its use-cases are and, arguably most importantly, how to get...

Apple confirms product launch event for March 8

Apple has confirmed it will be holding a product launch event six days from now, on March 8, 2022. Video: DIY project managed to shrink Apple’s M1 Mac Mini by 72% through some clever tinkering

[embedded content] Apple’s Mac Mini is one of the smaller all-in-one computers you’ll find on the market. But, if this latest video from YouTuber Quinn Nelson from Snazzy Labs is anything to go by, Apple could manage to shrink the device even further. Since the M1 Mac Mini was released, Nelson said he’s wanted to tear one down to see what’s inside and determine whether or not it’s possible to further shrink the compact desktop computer. While it’s taken a while to achieve what he set out to do, the ‘Mac Mini Mini’ is alive and well, showing...

Video: Slow Mo Guys record exploding capacitors at 187,500 frames per second

Gavin and Dan of The Slow Mo Guys are back to their typical slow mo fun. This time, the crew overloaded capacitors and recorded the results at a blisteringly fast 187,500 frames per second. When slowed down for presentation, that’s about 7500 times slower than you can see with your naked eye. The camera of choice is the Phantom TMX 7510. The crew used the same camera last summer to record glass shattering at 800,000 fps. To achieve 187,500 fps speed, the Phantom TMX 7510 must record at 1280 x 320 resolution. You can shoot even faster as...

Hands-on with the Panasonic GH6

The GH6 is the most recent in Panasonic’s video-centric line of cameras for the Micro Four Thirds system, dating back to the original GH1 in 2009. Since then, the GH series has come a long way, evolving into a very mature, widely used system. According to Panasonic, its goal with the GH6 was to combine the best attributes of its two predecessors, the GH5 and GH5S, into a single camera. In particular, this meant a camera with a higher resolution sensor, like the GH5, but which could still deliver greater dynamic range, like the GH5S. The...

NASA has announced that the Webb team has ‘successfully worked through the second and third out of seven total phases of mirror alignment.’ The team will now commence making smaller adjustments to the positions of Webb’s 18 primary mirror segments. The news comes only a few weeks after NASA announced that the James Webb Space Telescope saw its first star using all of its primary mirror segments. That...

Behind the Composition – The Catalyst

As I began better exploring the woodlands of Eastern Pennsylvania, I came to realize that photographing grand vistas which would stop people in their tracks, in the same manner as is found in the western states, would not be possible. The grandest vistas in Pennsylvania are hilly overlooks, often speckled throughout with a small town or two, along with trails made up by highways. There are no giant mountains to train your eye on, nor are there any great sand dunes to find abstract formations within. At best, we have waterfalls, which are...

Landscape Composition – Part 4: Subject direction and lead room

So far in this series, I’ve talked about compositional elements, their weights and how to use their properties to balance the composition by imagining a balance of torques around the middle axis of an image. I also discussed balancing of negative space. But even all this doesn’t give us a full picture of the factors that should affect compositional arrangement. This time, I intend to talk about another placement consideration which has a lot of impact on my own compositions: lead room. Is this iceberg ‘facing’ any...

The Panasonic GH6: What I wanted, what I got, and what I didn’t expect

Five years is a long time. I asked my six year old and he agreed. That’s how long it’s been since Panasonic released the GH5, which I would argue is one of the most important digital cameras ever released. It brought 10-bit video recording to the masses and, for me, it was the first mirrorless camera that truly felt like a replacement for a professional cinema camera. Unlimited recording in most modes, waveforms, vector scopes, shutter angles… These were the conveniences many professional videographers and cinematographers would pay a huge...
