Reply to How many times did you regret buying second hand gear?

I had all of my camera bodies (40D, 5DII and 7D) purchased second hand on ebay, the most expensive one (5DII) I had examined before buying since the (private) seller lived only 10 km away from my home.No regrets here on any of those cameras. Regarding my lenses, there are three primes and three zooms that I bought on ebay from private sellers, only one of them (a 70-200 f4 L IS USM, my first purchase) was old and used and has focusing issues in certain situations, so I probably paid more for it than it was worth. Yet I don’t regret it,...

Canon announces $17K 800mm F5.6, $20K 1200mm F8 lenses for RF mount

On the 35th anniversary of Canon’s EOS line, the company has announced two new RF-mount super-telephoto lenses: the RF 800mm F5.6 L IS USM and RF 1200mm F8 L IS USM. While these lenses are similar in name to their EF counterparts, both lenses feature new optical constructions and weigh quite a bit less. Starting first with the similarities between the 800mm F5.6 and 1200mm F8, both lenses feature two focus presets for quickly switching between specific focus distances, use nine-blade aperture diaphragms, offer weathersealing and feature a...

Canon celebrates 35 years of its EOS System next month

Next month, Canon will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the company’s EOS System, which made its debut in March 1987 when Canon launched the EOS 650 SLR and three EF lenses: the 50mm F1.8, the 35–70mm F3.5–4.5 and the EF 35–105mm F3.5–4.5. The EOS branding serves dual purpose, as an acronym for Electro Optical System and as a tribute to Eos, a Titaness and the goddess of the dawn in Greek mythology. Since the launch of the EOS System, Canon has released dozens of SLR, DSLR and mirrorless, and over 100 lenses for its EF and RF lens mounts....

What is dual gain and how does it work?

The Panasonic Lumix DC-GH6 has a ‘dual gain’ sensor, but not in the sense you’re likely to have encountered before. The Panasonic GH6 features a mode called Dynamic Range Boost which the company says is based on a sensor that features ‘dual output gain.’ This mode is always engaged in stills shooting mode, making it the first time we’ve seen dual output gain on a stills camera. Given the widespread adoptions of the similar-sounding ‘dual gain’ sensor design, we thought this would be a good time...

CIPA’s 2022 outlook suggests both camera and lens shipments will slightly decline

CIPA has published its annual outlook, wherein it shares its outlook on the shipment of cameras, lenses and other photo-related products for the 2022 year. CIPA starts off by sharing the data for 2021, which showed total digital camera shipments, which include both compact cameras and interchangeable lens cameras, were down 5.9% year-over-year (YoY) in terms of units shipped. Isolate interchangeable lens cameras, however, and we actually get a .8% increase YoY in units shipped. While positive, it’s important to realize that the previous year,...

What does Sigma’s support mean for X-mount?

What does Sigma’s support mean for X-mount?

It may be lacking an aperture ring, but the 56mm F1.4 DC DN makes a great match for the Fujifilm X-T4, in terms of size and balance. The arrival of Sigma’s 16mm, 30mm and 56mm F1.4 DC DN lenses is another step forward for the X-mount system. No matter how comprehensive Fujifilm makes its own lineup of lenses, it’s always beneficial to not have a system solely tied to one company’s vision of the system or dependent on its production priorities. Sigma joins Zeiss, Tamron, Tokina and Viltrox in supporting the system, giving...

Reply to CR3 Software

I just bought a 90D and discovered CR3 RAW files. Here is the problem. We typically go out on 3-4 day hunts and return with 400-500 images that need to be sorted and filed. For 16 years I’ve used Canon’s excellent Zoombrowser software. I know it was discontinued long time ago but it is perfect for comparing 30-40 images of the same bug and deleting the files that fall short. It was also used to add notes to the jpeg images. Zoombrowser does not recognize CR3 files. What do you guys use for sorting and managing CR3 files? I need...

UAVs go to the major leagues as the MLB starts testing drone use during baseball games

A screenshot from the Field of Dreams field that was used as a testing ground for drone-use during MLB-sanctioned events. Major League Baseball (MLB) is continuing to adopt the use of drones for more than just scenic aerial shots from a distance during games. While last year’s ‘Field of Dreams’ game showcased the first efforts to implement drones into baseball coverage, this past weekend the MLB took its next step by testing out using a DJI Inspire 2 for TV coverage of a college tournament. For the test, the MLB used an...

Megadap is a name you might not immediately recognize, with their product lineup consisting entirely of adapters. These adapters aren’t just your basic mounting rings, however. In the case of the MTZ11, the adapter brings autofocus to lenses that never had it: autofocusing Leica M lenses on Nikon Z cameras. This interesting technical accomplishment includes all the usual features of Nikon Z autofocus, like Eye AF and AF-C, with a huge range of Leica M lenses. Beyond that, even non-Leica-M lenses can be mounted to Nikon Z cameras with...
