Gear of the Year 2021: Barney’s choice – Nikon Z9

I feel like the luckiest boy in the world right now, sitting at my desk to write an article I’ve been looking forward to for weeks about a camera I’d been looking forward to for years. Luckier still because I actually have the camera. There’s a shiny new Nikon Z9 sitting next to me right now, with a Z 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 VR S attached, just begging me to go out and shoot with it. But I can’t, because I have to write this article. Also because it’s dumping with icy rain outside, and I’m all warm, and besides,...

Happy holidays from DPReview! Here are a few of our favorite articles of 2021

2021, eh? What a year. All of the horror and inconvenience of 2020, without the novelty factor. There was good news out there though, hidden in the cracks between the headlines. This was the year for many of us that we got to see distant friends and family again, and despite all the disruption it’s been a busy 12 months for the camera market, with some big announcements, and some major technological developments taking place across the industry. The past year seems to have flown by (even if parts of it felt like an endless slog) but...

Lensrentals shares the most-rented cameras and lenses in 2021

Lensrentals has published its roundup of the most popular rented gear for 2021, showcasing what camera equipment was the most rented throughout 2021. As we’ve seen over the past few years, both Canon and Sony top the charts across nearly every category. Looking first at the most rented new products of 2021, Canon took the top position with the EOS C70 Cinema Camera (RF mount). Cinema cameras occupy multiple spots on the list, including the Sony FX3 in second and the Sony FX6 in fourth. The Nikon Z7 II, although announced in 2020, is...

Sony ceases orders for a7C and a6600, confirms a7 II and a6100 have reached end-of-life

Sony Japan has announced it’s halting production of two more cameras due to the ongoing chip shortage. Sony Japan also confirmed it is no longer producing another pair of cameras as an end-of-li In a statement posted to Sony Japan’s website, Sony says it is no longer fulfilling orders for its a7C full-frame mirrorless camera and its a6600 APS-C mirrorless camera, as ‘there is a delay in procurement of parts for digital imaging products due to the global shortage of semiconductors.’ Sony even suggests current orders could go unfulfilled,...

Gear Of The Year 2021: Jordan’s Choice – Apple M1 iMac

This thin yellow rectangle makes me very happy! 2021 may have been another terrible year, but you wouldn’t know it from looking at the photography and video gear released in the last twelve months. We saw a trio of flagship mirrorless cameras, a 12K cinema camera, a full frame camera built onto a gimbal, and an endless parade of wonderful lenses. However, like many creators, I spend a lot more time in front of a computer than out in the field shooting. And since the launch of the M1 iMac, that part of my job has become immeasurably more...

Hands-on and sample footage from the Sirui 24mm F2.8 1.33x anamorphic lens

This image was captured by the Sirui 24mm anamorphic lens in 17:9 and de-squeezed 1.33x to produce a 2.35:1 aspect ratio. Traditionally, dedicated anamorphic lenses for interchangeable lens cameras have been expensive, but Sirui has made a mission of creating much more affordable options. Though the company now has a full frame 50mm anamorphic lens, the majority of its output so far has been aimed at APS-C and Micro Four Thirds system users. The 24mm F2.8 is the third in its line of low-cost crop-sensor 1.33x anamorphic lenses. This new 24mm...

New optical fabrication method uses liquid polymer for faster & cheaper custom lenses

Researchers at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology have developed a ‘faster, cheaper method to produce customized optical components’ for applications including ‘corrective lenses, augmented and virtual reality, autonomous vehicles, medical imaging and astronomy.’ As DIY Photography observes, it’s not unreasonable to think that the new lens making method could be used for photographic lenses, at least during development and prototyping. Optical lenses come in many different shapes and sizes. The more...

Nikon Z 24-120mm F4 S sample gallery

Nikon’s new Z 24-120mm F4 S is a standard zoom lens for the full-frame mirrorless Z mount, intended to offer a more versatile and cheaper alternative to the high-end Z 24-70mm F2.8 S. Providing decent medium telephoto reach, good close focusing capabilities and a lighter, more portable form factor, the Z 24-120mm F4 S should make an ideal carry-everywhere zoom for Z6 and Z7-series shooters. We’ve been shooting with a production sample of the Z 24-120mm F4 S for a few days on both the Nikon Z7 and the new Z9. We’ll be adding...

Gear of the Year: Gannon’s choice – Kolari EF-RF Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter

For someone who writes about the latest and greatest camera gear, you might be surprised to find out how little new equipment I use in my photo work. Rather than using the latest RF mount lenses for my Canon EOS R, I have mostly stuck with older, adapted lenses from various film cameras I’ve acquired over the years. It’s for that reason my favorite piece of gear for the year is Kolari’s EF-RF mount adapter with a built-in variable ND filter. My usual kit for photojournalism or motorsports work consists of my Canon EOS R with a Nikon...

Hands-on with new Nikon FTZ II adapter

Alongside the Z9, and a bunch of other things, Nikon announced a new version of the FTZ adapter, named – appropriately enough – the FTZ II. The new adapter offers no additional functionality compared to the original, and if you’re planning on rocking a Z5, Z6 or Z7-series camera for a while, there’s probably no reason to upgrade. But if you’ve got your eye on a Z9, the FTZ II is the adapter you’ll want to grab. Click through for more...

Just as children look forward to Christmas, many wildlife photographers in 2021 have also been focused on the end of the year. What’s causing all the buzz? It’s exactly the same as it is for the children: Wildlife photographers are looking forward to getting new toys. Sony already had a gift for their users in the form of the A1 camera, which was announced back in January of 2021. LG’s new 4K UltraFine OLED Pro monitor lineup features built-in calibration tool

Correction (Monday, December 20, 2021): It appears as though LG relatively quietly introduced a 27” model of its UltraFine OLED Pro monitor earlier this year, but as of now it’s still only available to pre-order at this time, so it hasn’t actually made it to market. The original headline and parts of this article stated the 27″ model was new. We have updated both to correct this information. LG has announced the details of its next-generation UltraFine OLED Pro monitors, revealing the 2022 models will include built-in colorimeters for...

Gear of the Year: Dale’s choice – Sony 14mm F1.8 GM

Every December, when the time comes to choose my gear of the year, I usually pick a product I’ve used extensively over the past few months. Which makes sense – if there’s a product I enjoy using, chances are I’ll pick it up a lot and get to know it well. 2021 is a bit different. This year, I knew what my gear of the year was going to be after just one trip with it: the Sony 14mm F1.8 GM. I instantly connected with this lens, and it hardly came off my camera. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first...

Treat yourself 2021: The ultimate photographers’ gift guide

It should go without saying that wherever you are, 2021 came with a unique set of challenges, but there were also plenty of bright spots. Reply to Did you shoot film in the old days, when did digital become better film

IMO it really depends what you’re doing. I think that even today large format can match digital for highly technical and slow photography due to the freedom of movements and the size of the negative but for fast paced or time sensitive photography digital was better very quickly.put any dslr up against a 4×5 camera or larger format camera and I think you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference in final image quality in a blind test.If you’re comparing only to 35mm then any camera over about 8-10mpix is probably better...

Which Tamron Lenses Should Nikon Z Prioritize?

The recent, unexpected announcement of the Nikon Z 28-75mm f/2.8 – with identical optics as the Tamron G1 28-75mm f/2.8 – makes me wonder what’s next. Will Nikon and Tamron work together on any more Z-series lenses? If so, these are the lenses they should prioritize. Before going through the list, I should emphasize that we don’t yet know what agreement Nikon and Tamron have behind the scenes. The 28-75mm f/2.8 may simply be a one-time trial balloon floated to see how much interest there is in budget Z-series lenses. Or, it could represent a...
