Video: Using wet-plate collodion photography process for high-end food photography

Photographer Markus Hofstaetter works with the wet-plate collodion process. While this process is typically seen with portraiture — and Hofstaetter does that, too — he recently teamed up with food photographer and chef Hans Gerlach to use the wet-plate process for food photography. The results are excellent. In a blog post, Hofstaetter discussed how he met with Gerlach and set up his equipment for food photography. Hofstaetter bought a 150kg Cambo studio stand earlier this year and then found a tray for it on eBay. Gerlach was the eBay...

So when it comes to this...

Many of these video reviews and hands-on are more general, but they all hit on the camera capabilities of Apple’s latest devices and some, such as Peter McKinnon’s video and Austin Mann’s article, do...

Range Masks Explained: One of Lightroom’s Most Powerful Tools

For years, Lightroom’s tools for selective adjustments left something to be desired. The “detect edges” feature often adds noise to soft areas like clouds, whereas the standard brush and gradient tools can affect too much of the image. Range masking fixes those problems. Table of Contents What Is Range Masking in Lightroom? Range masking was added to Lightroom a few years ago and has since become one of my favorite post-processing tools. Lightroom has two types of range masking: luminance (which selects portions of the image by brightness)...

ProGrade Digital has announced the release of the CFexpress Type A Cobalt, a new lineup that offers read and write speeds of 800MB/s and 700MB/s, respectively, at a relatively affordable price. While the CFexpress Type A format is smaller than the more ubiquitous SD card – and up to three times faster – the format has struggled to take hold, for two reasons in particular. First, Sony is the only camera manufacturer that currently has cameras with the slot and support to use the media. Second, CFexpress Type A cards tend to be quite a bit more...

Historical footnote to technology of the future: three moments with the Canon EOS R3 that changed my opinion of Eye Control

The EOS R3’s Eye Control system works on a similar principle to the one used in the late 90’s and early 2000s, but isn’t really trying to select individual, discrete AF points To me, Eye Control has always been some great ‘what if,’ that inevitably gets mentioned when camera geeks of a certain age spent too much time together. I went straight from a manual focus SLR to digital cameras, so I’ve never felt those pangs of nostalgia, myself: it just sounded like a failed technology that even Canon seemed happy...

Apple’s 7 minute video helps you decide which iPhone 13 has the best camera for you

Apple has just released a 7 minute video detailing some of the biggest upgrades to the iPhone 13 camera systems. If we wanted you to walk away with one take-home from the keynote, other than the Cinematic Mode everyone’s talking about, it’d be this: Apple crammed the rather large 1/1.9″-type sensor with 1.7µm pixels from last year’s largest iPhone 12 Pro Max into this year’s smallest iPhone 13 Mini. Meanwhile, all models saw modest sensor size increases, and you no longer have to choose the largest phone to get...

A dedicated amateur astronomer in Brazil caught an object hitting Jupiter’s surface

An image of Jupiter taken by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope Brazilian amateur astronomer José Luis Pereira was shooting Jupiter on September 13 when an object struck the gas giant. Pereira used a QHY5III462C camera with a Newtonian 275mm F5.3 telescope in São Caetano do Sul, São Paulo, Brazil when he captured the incredible event. It was a clear night, so he recorded 25 videos to put through a program called DeTeCt. The software is used to analyze video and detect impacts on Jupiter and Saturn. The camera Pereira used records color at...
