Is the Canon EOS R3’s Eye Control AF good enough for sports shooting?

Introduction Not your average viewfinder, this. As expected, the Canon EOS R3 is chock-full of some of the latest and greatest camera technology that we’ve ever seen. Much of this is due to an all-new, super-fast sensor, redesigned processor and a machine learning-trained autofocus system that readily detects humans, animals and race cars. As such, Canon is quick to point out that there is much more to the EOS R3 than just Eye Control AF – but Eye Control AF is a novel feature, despite debuting decades ago, and frankly, it’s...

Did Apple’s iPhone 13 ‘Cinematic Mode’ just revolutionize mobile cinematography?

Apple has just announced its iPhone 13 lineup, and one of the stand out features is the new ‘Cinematic Mode’. On the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max models, Cinematic Mode allows you to adjust the aperture, or f-stop, to change the depth-of-field after you’ve shot your video. It also allows you change what’s in focus, or rack focus from one subject to another, after-the-fact. Remember the Lytro Cinema camera the size of a small car that promised the same thing? Think that… but in your pocket. With the iPhone...

Canon EOS R3 Announcement

Canon just announced its highest-end mirrorless camera ever, the $6000 EOS R3 (shipping November). The R3 has a 24 megapixel stacked BSI sensor and is capable of capturing blackout-free 30 FPS with full autofocus and auto exposure. Perhaps the most exciting feature is the eye-sensing autofocus that positions the initial focusing point wherever the photographer looks. There was a time when DSLRs had unambiguously better performance for sports and wildlife photography than mirrorless cameras, especially for autofocus tracking on fast-moving...

Published Sep 14, 2021 | dpreview staff Canon has announced a pair of ‘budget friendly’ lenses – one telephoto and one wide – for its RF mount. The RF 100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is similar in spirit to the RF 600mm F11 and RF 800mm F11 in that it’s very affordable and quite portable given its focal length range, with a slow maximum aperture being the main tradeoff. The 100-400 measures just 165 x 80mm (6.5 x 3.1 in.) in size and weighs 630 g (22.4 oz.). The lens’ built-in optical stabilization can reduce shake by up to...
