Readers’ Showcase: Documentary and Street photography

Posted by on 20th, Oct, 2014 in Blog | 0 comments

Nobody has any privacy if he or she can be seen through a window, anything and anyone visible from public can be photographed and there is no invasion of privacy, if you don’t want to be photographed then don’t get out of your home and don’t go near windows, it’s so simple, by being near the window you automatically consent to being photographed. Privacy is not useful anymore in the modern era in general, there is no need for privacy, for example everything I facebook is public and I never use the privacy settings, I...

Fotodiox creates ‘Tough E-Mount’ for Sony E & FE-mount cameras

I fear A7(R) customers could drop a screw onto the sensor, or better said the filter in front of it…and couldn’t get the exact torque criss-cross onto the mount. I’m wondering, does the A7 have the internal structure basis for being stable enough to support a all metal mount? the A7S does have it by design, but neither the A7(R)…and i mind have had reading before, the A7S front panel had been extra designed heavy duty to support a metal mount, and heavy lenses, especially. Apart from that, good idea…but...

Video: Football Player Falls On and Snaps Canon Telephoto Lens in Half on the Sideline

While diving for a catch at the back of end zone during today’s game against Kansas State, Oklahoma wide receiver Sterling Shepard landed on something not-so-soft, but oh-so-very-expensive on the sideline: what looks to be a Canon 1DX attached to either a 400mm f/2.8L or a 500mm f/4L. Shepard, we’re happy to report, is okay. The lens… she’s gone. You can see the entire fall in this short Vine video by FanSide GIF, but be warned, this footage might disturb some viewers: Depending on the lens in question, and whether or not the...

Photographer Alex Teuscher’s Moody Photos of New York City ‘Above as Below’

When Geneva-based photographer Alex Teuscher found himself in New York City for 10 days this last April, he tried to capture some of the most iconic, tourist-packed locations on the globe from a new angle. It’s a testament to his skill as a photographer that he succeeded to such a great extent. The resulting shots have been compiled into a series he’s calling “New York City: Above as Below,” and consist of a mix of street (below) and architectural (above) photography that’s best described as ‘moody.’ He told us a bit...

Astronaut Reid Wiseman Uses a Floating Sphere of Water as ‘The Ultimate Fisheye Lens’ on the ISS

If we asked you to name the ultimate fisheye lens, the comments would probably fill up with many gear suggestions. Some, like this rare Nikon 6mm lens that pops up for sale occasionally, would probably be named more than once, but there’s one suggestion you probably wouldn’t make: a floating sphere of water. That, however, is ISS astronaut Reid Wiseman‘s entry for the Ultimate Fisheye Lens. The vine videos below, uploaded about a week ago when Wiseman had some time to play around with the concept, show why: Wiseman’s been...

Camera collectors, unfold your wallets… it’s time for another installment of “cool rare things currently on eBay.” Except in this case ‘rare’ can be replaced with ‘unique,’ as in these cameras are supposedly one-of-a-kind. The Flickr iPad App Has Officially Arrived

In its quest to continue resuscitating Flickr, Yahoo! has finally responded to popular demands and released its first official Flickr for iPad app — a release that coincides very well with Apple’s decision to make the iPad a more capable (if still embarrassing to use) camera. The announcement was made at 3am last night, because… you know… strategy. But regardless, the new app is meant to take advantage of all that sweet screen real estate with iPad specific layouts and browsing capabilities that are much more immersive than the...

How to Find and Use Hyperfocal Distance for Sharp Backgrounds

A Post By: Jim Hamel You are out photographing a landscape. You have a nice foreground and background in the frame, and you want as much as possible in focus. You set a small aperture to get a nice wide depth of field. But still, you know that not everything in your frame will be sharp. The fact is that lenses just cannot keep everything – from what is right in front of you all the way to the horizon – acceptably sharp at the same time. You can focus on something very close at the risk of blurring the background. Or you can focus on...

Lee Filters introduces Landscape Polariser with built-in warm-up

British filter manufacturer Lee Filters has announced a new polarising filter that features a built-in warm-up effect that it says is aimed at landscape photographers. The 105mm Landscape Polariser has been designed with a shallow mount and with a 105mm diameter so that it will be useful for wide angle views, with the company suggesting it will be compatible with focal lengths as wide as 16mm on full frame SLRs. A spokesman for Lee told DP Review that the warm-up element of the Landscape Polariser is the equivalent to adding an 81A warm-up...

Old Navy #Selfiebration is a Contraption That Turns Selfies Into Halftone Balloon Portraits

To celebrate its 20th birthday, Old Navy has created what it’s calling a #Selfiebration machine. What is a Selfiebration machine you ask? Why, it’s a 15 foot contraption that turns Twitter selfies into ephemeral pieces of balloon art, à la halftone stylization. There will be two of these #Selfiebration machines on display: one in in New York City’s Times Square on October 22nd, and the other in Los Angeles’ Hollywood & Highland Center on October 25th. The campaign will run between October 16th and 25th, giving you just...

Photographer Takes on Stereotypes by Capturing the Diversity of Iranian Father-Daughter Relationships

During her time in Malaysia, roughly 3,500 miles away from her home in Iran, photographer Nafise Motlaq was troubled by the way people would talk about her country. Partially perpetuated by the media, she saw people making judgements without any first-hand knowledge of the country’s actual culture. It was this frustration with misrepresentation that, once she was home, inspired Motlaq to pick up her camera and begin an intimate series of photographs exploring the father-daughter relationship in Iran. Zahra’s father is a farm...

This Creative Ad Imagines what a Multi-Decade Time-Lapse of a Living Room Would Look Like

Have you ever wondered what a multi-decade time-lapse of your living room would look like? Well, we don’t exactly have one to share with you, but what we do have is this clever advertisement from Dutch company Philips that tries to imagine what that might be like. In the video, Philips uses stop-motion to show how the living room has evolved, decade to decade, since the invention of the light bulb. The point they’re trying to make is that the living room has evolved, but the light bulb has not, and so this is actually a commercial...

BTS: Climbing 2,500 Feet to Photograph One of the Most Inaccessible Churches in Africa

There are some things in this world that are impossible to photograph without the willingness to make a little sacrifice and step out of your comfort zone. Such was the case with photographer Philip Lee Harvey, who took it upon himself to photograph what is referred to by some as the ‘world’s most dangerous church.’ The church, which is dug into the side of a cliff, sits roughly 2,500 feet above the ground. To access it, you must scale a portion of the cliff, walk on numerous narrow bridges and finally hop skip and jump your way...
