read moreA Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt Earlier today I shared a collection of sports images. Now as usual it’s time for the challenge. I throw down the gauntlet and urge you to accept it and play along (pun intended). Sports photography is a tricky subject. Fast moving subjects, quickly changing lighting conditions, and restrictions on where you are allowed to stand. All these things can be overcome and conquered – with practice! Now is the perfect time to get out and do just that. Try out your high speed shooting mode, or borrow a lens. Find a...
read moreA Post By: Darlene Hildebrandt The part of the world where I live, we’re already starting to feel the changing season coming. Here that means summer is giving way to fall and cooler temperatures. This roundup of summer sports photography is to help those of us in the northern part of the world to hang on to it a little bit longer. What’s your favorite sport to watch or photograph? Maybe you’ll be inspired to go shoot some action or sports while the weather lasts. Ready?  Go! Unlimited playground by Tristan Shu on 500px Buffalo race by...
read moreCont’d. Samsung, compared to Japanese companies, is a different bag of cats. Samsung is known to mercilessly kill off the units which are not profitable. If NX would fail to gain desired market share, Sammy would kill it. (There were dates named, but I can’t recall them.) All in all, the only large companies which are somewhat stable right now (and have stake in the camera market) are Canon, Ricoh and Panasonic. (But Canon is expected to have troubles ahead: the printing market, the cashcow, is steadily shrinking. Printing is...
read moreHow is “no road maps” a good thing? Without a roadmap, you’re just left blind as to what new products are coming down the pipe, and you’re just going off of random rumors! For quite a long time now, there have been rumors of a 100-400L IS update, and it was even rumored to be introduced at Photokina. Obviously, that didn’t happen. Others have been wondering what the heck Canon is going to do with their EOS M line. But with no roadmap, you’re just left hanging. And that’s what happens when companies...

read moreA Post By: Simon Ringsmuth Photography is like any other pursuit in life, in that it requires a great deal of time and practice. Unless you make a living as a professional photographer, you might find that you simply don’t have enough hours in the day to devote to taking pictures. With work, family, school, and plenty of other obligations in our lives, it’s easy to let photography take a back seat to everything else. So, unfortunately we often find our expensive cameras gathering dust on the shelf, and our vibrant photo libraries growing...
read moreA Post By: Jim Hamel When photographing outdoors, you generally take the world as you find it, and you have very little control over the elements. You cannot control the weather. The terrain is a given. You certainly cannot control the skies or the clouds. But when photographing seascapes there is one thing you can control, and that is the waves. At least, you can control the appearance of the waves. This is a fundamental difference between landscapes and seascapes. In landscapes you have generally static ground and foreground elements, while...
read moreDoesn’t make much sense, really. A digital camera is more computer than camera these days, and the sensor is just the tip of the iceberg. Improvements in power, processor design, process design, ISP technology, bus technology, storage technology, and more mean that, like computers, it does little good to simply drop in a new sensor. read moreA spare but fair (i.e., not gratuitously snarky) report. DPR could only mention what Ricoh brought to the event, so it is what it is. My only observation would be on the point “As with all Pentax DSLRs, [theK-S1] optical viewfinder is very large for its price range.” Since all Pentax DSLR viewfinders are still high-quality pentaprisms, even the entry-level OVF’s are better than most viewfinders from other makers, in any price range. Viewfinder quality resonates somewhat with mention that DPR forgot a polarizer to eliminate...
read moreI have to say that, Tamron isn’t quite on the sigma’s “art” prime lens level. 150-600 was more of a upgrade to sigma’s 50-500, but only minor. They make good lenses “for the buck”, like the 70-300 VC. What I fear is that this lens wont be “that sharp” wide open, which is area where it could have good potential versus the Nikon 16-35 f4 (low light action / movement, indoors / event). But then again, I don’t know enough about their 24-70 2.8 . If that thing is sharp wide open, then it...
