Published Aug 11, 2021 | dpreview staff We recently got our hands on a final production Nikon Z fc, and we wasted no time taking the retro-styled camera out and about around the Seattle area. Given that it uses the sensor from the Z50, we expected solid image quality, and the Z fc delivers. The collapsable 16-50mm F3.5-6.3 lens isn’t fast, but it’s decently sharp, and only adds about $140 to the price of the body-only kit. We’re still waiting for Raw support for Z fc files in Adobe Camera Raw, so many images in this gallery...

We tried out the Fujifilm version and found the lens a tad unwieldy to use for still photography due to its heft (590g / 1.31lbs) and the fact there’s no electronic communication between lens and camera body, meaning no manual focus assist (at least when mounted on Fujifilm bodies). Still, zooming into 100% proved adequate...
read moreIf you close your eyes, point your camera in any direction, and take a picture, I’m willing the bet the photo won’t be a success. Unless you’re doing some artsy “blindfolded photography” project, it completely lacks intent or any engagement with the scene in front of you. Level 0: The blindfolded photographer It’s not like that’s a common thing photographers do, but I wanted to mention it as the most extreme example of not perceiving things in photography. It’s hardly more personal than a security camera or a photo you took by accident. But...

read moreOK, I lied a bit. I said the second chapter would be more fun than the first, but it’s not more fun. It’s kind of sad, actually. This one focuses (yes, pun intended) on Joseph Nicephore Niepce. You may know him as the man who took the first photograph. But back in his day people knew him as . . . . . actually they didn’t know of him at all, really. After Wedgwood’s efforts around 1800, there was a gap where people weren’t working on making images. There was too much other stuff going on. Most of the world was at war...
