Real Estate Photography Question And Answer

Manuel’s Question: I read Scott Hargis’s Lighting Interiors book and it’s awesome, but I have one concern. Why does he never mention white balance? Answer: Shoot in RAW, set your WB on auto and then touch it up as needed in Lightroom or Photoshop. Also, you’ll find that when using flash, the flash will tend to dominate the WB. I shoot with WB on Auto and very rarely have to change the WB in Lightroom. Greg’s Question: I’m really confused on how this whole Virtual Tour thing works from the Realtor’s perspective. I...

Finding and Working with Available Light

A Post By: Michael Walker-Toye I don’t use a flash for my photography, it’s a personal preference. Available light, in its many forms, is both challenging and rewarding so I rarely find a need to turn to creative lighting. Natural light, golden hour What is ‘available light’? Let’s be clear on definitions first. As a street photographer my preferred source of light is sunlight, more specifically, natural light. Available and ambient light refer to any and all light sources the photographer did not introduce for their photograph;...

The Power of Post-processing for Landscape Photography

A Post By: Todd Sisson Embracing the power of creative post-processing can transform your landscape photography from dull and lifeless, to lustrous and vibrant overnight! We’re acutely aware that the preceding statement reads suspiciously like the voiceover script for a ‘next generation, nano-organic hair care’ commercial, but it’s true – digital post-processing can be a transcendent experience for your landscape images. Sunset over the Mount Egmont from Wai-iti Beach, Taranaki Coast, New Zealand (by Sarah). Post-processing...

Canon G1 X Mark II First Impressions Review

Posted by on 17th, Apr, 2014 in Blog | 0 comments

It is about intent, not size. Either/or.I can put a little S70 Canon in my pocket. I cannot do that with any of these three. I can put much more easily, a tiny Exilim or iPhone, or Ixus in my pocket, but I’m only going to do that if I dont CARE about results. The Canon is way too big, as is the RX10, to go in anyone’s pocket. It needs a bag, or to be on a strap round your neck. So you might as well have a DSLR. Really. Even an a6000 or Fuji Xpro style APS-C is as big as a DSLR, and there are a lot smaller ones than a D7100 with a...

5 Reasons for Doing Natural Light Portraits

A Post By: Andrew S. Gibson With all the attention given to the art and craft of shooting portraits using flash, you could be forgiven for thinking that this is the only way to take a portrait. The truth is that while fashionable Speedlites get all the attention, there are photographers working almost entirely in natural light and creating beautiful portraits without a softbox or light stand in sight. One of the most prolific is Eduardo Izq, a photographer based in the United States who has built an impressive portfolio of natural light...

Guide to Creative White Balance for Landscape Photography

A Post By: Alex Morrison If you’ve been using a digital camera for any length of time, you’ve probably heard about White Balance. You may still be wondering exactly what it is, and how to use it; or you may be using it right now and be wondering how it can possibly be something “creative”. Different white balance settings create different looks I’m going to show you some of my techniques for using White Balance to creatively enhance your landscape photography and with a few simple steps you can unlock the remarkable power of...

Fujifilm announces 1.4x teleconverter for X100/X100S

Posted by on 16th, Apr, 2014 in Blog | 0 comments

Everyone, even those really interested in cameras, cannot be expected to remember the specs of every camera. I try, and still I sometimes wonder things like “hmmh, I remember the X100 was a bit special, but what was it now?” On another note, I would have very much liked if they told in this article what the effect this extra lens has on maximum aperture / t-stop. With between-lens-and-body adapters this is pretty much a known (because such a tele extender just spreads the light (already collected by the lens) to a larger area),...

Fuji adds grips, grip strap, and extended eye-cup accessories for X-T1

First up are a pair of grips for the X-T1: the MHG-XT Small and Large. The former is more like an adapter than anything else, as all of the other compatible grips can be attached to it (including the battery grip). The MHG-XT Large is just what it sounds like: an even larger grip than the currently available MHG-XT. Both grips have enough spacing to allow for use of larger lenses and allow easy access to the battery/memory card compartment. They also have flanges for Arca-Swiss adapters built right in. For those who want a more...

Sony releases update for QX10 and QX100 lens modules

Sony has released a firmware update for its QX10 and QX100 camera modules that bring a couple of improvements. The shutter button can now be used to pre-focus with a half-press which allows you to focus and recompose with the QX modules just like you would do with any digital camera.  Sony has also improved the QX models’ NFC performance. The modules can now establish a NFC connection to your smartphone quicker, just make sure you’ve got the latest version of Sony’s PlayMemories Mobile app (v4.2 or newer) installed....
