Panasonic announces HLG plug-in for Photoshop CC, adds Raw video modes to S-series cameras

Panasonic has announced a plug-in that allows true-to-life HDR stills to be edited in Photoshop CC. Its S-series cameras can output high dynamic range images compatible with the Hybrid Log Gamma standard, but until now there’d been no easy way to edit them. The LUMIX HLG Photo plug-in will allow HLG stills from the S1, S1R, S5 and S1H to be opened, edited and saved within Photoshop. The results can then be viewed by connecting the camera to an HDR TV using an HDMI lead. We haven’t yet had a chance to test the plug-in, but the...

Kolari Vision’s new R5 cooling mod doubles 8K recording time and improves recovery time

Kolari Vision, a company known for its camera modifications, has unveiled what it claims to be the first commercially-available service for modifying Canon EOS R5 cameras so they can record nearly double the 8K footage and dramatically decrease the wait time needed to recover when the camera does overheat. The modification uses a custom heatsink that vents the thermal energy from the processor inside the camera to the camera’s magnesium frame via a ‘high-efficiency thermal pad,’ effectively turning the entire frame of the camera into an even...

LAANC is still down for drone operators, no word from FAA on when it’ll be back up

Update: according to FAADroneZone’s official Twitter account, LAANC is back up as of 8:09 PM EST. The FAA is still investigating the cause of the outage. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) created Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability (LAANC), a free service, to automate approvals, in real-time, for both commercial and recreational drone pilots looking to operate in controlled airspace. The program started out as a prototype in 2017 and subsequently became available on top airspace management apps including Aloft...

PostPro’s Wand is a Lightroom plug-in that wants to take the guesswork out of culling event photos

Surveys reveal that most event photographers spend an inordinate amount of time both editing and culling photos. PostPro created Wand, a plug-in for Adobe’s Lightroom that attempts to solve at least one of those problems. The program, which is now out of beta, separates the good photos from the bad. By eliminating the time it takes to manually cull photos, event photographers can save a great deal of time in the post-processing phase of a gig. This Leica M3 replica is only $89 (and made entirely of wood)

If a genuine Leica camera is too rich for your wallet blood, this might be your next best option. It’s a wooden Leica M3 replica camera from Leica Rumors that will set you back just $89 — less than a third of most Leica lens hoods retail for. This first batch, which includes only ‘a few’ units, is a test run to gauge interest. If these first units, each of which has its own unique markings and grain due to the handmade nature of the replicas, sells out quickly enough, the wooden replicas will become a permanent item in the Leica Rumors online...

The 2021 US Open golf tournament is underway at at Torrey Pines in California. This year, the tee box at the sixth hole included an array of 88 cameras to deliver slow-motion bullet-time replays of the pro golfers as they hit their drives. The camera array was first used last week at the US Women’s Open, although similar technology has been used in previous years. A similar 4DReplay system was employed on the 15th tee of the PGA Championship in 2019. You can see that technology in action in the video below. [embedded content] Golf...

What to know before buying your first interchangeable lens digital camera

Why would I buy an interchangeable lens camera? Now that the cameras in smartphones have become so good, the question ‘why should I buy an interchangeable lens camera (ILC)’ ends up being very similar to the question ‘why would I buy a dedicated camera at all?’ We believe there are plenty of good reasons to buy an ILC, whether it’s a DSLR or a mirrorless camera. The most significant of these reasons is image quality. Interchangeable lens cameras are often capable of producing better image quality, in a wider...

An Abundance of Good Cameras

We’ve reviewed 28 full-frame digital cameras so far at Photography Life. Every one of them has gotten at least four stars. In the abstract, that sure seems like too much – but when I look at each camera again, I can’t help but think every single one deserves it. This is how I see things: 1 Star: Unusable 2 Star: Bad 3 Star: Ok 4 Star: Good 5 Star: Excellent Maybe you could argue with some of those categories, but it’s hardly the “4.9 stars is great, 4.5 stars sucks” scale the internet can be known for. Yet almost every modern camera is at...

There can be only one: why isn’t the EOS R3 an EOS R1?

Something is beginning to make me think Canon intends the EOS R3 to be a full-on pro sports camera. Time has a habit of eroding certainty like the sea lapping at the foreshore; something like that, anyway. The point being that opinions and predictions have a horrible habit of being rendered outdated, and even downright ridiculous, by events. Which is my roundabout way of saying that I’m having second thoughts about the EOS R3. When Canon first announced its development, I opined that it was going to be an intermediate model between the...

Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR Review

A lightweight, do-it-all lens for Nikon Z cameras, with fewer compromises than a typical superzoom. By Spencer Cox 8 CommentsLast Updated On June 19, 2021 « » The word “superzoom” doesn’t always conjure pleasant images in a photographer’s mind. Historically, a lot of superzooms are low-end lenses with bad image quality and even worse construction. The $900 Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR aims to change that impression. Does it succeed? It’s complicated. While the Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 is in most ways the best superzoom we’ve ever tested, it’s still...

Austrian photographer Markus Hofstätter is known for his analog photography. He primarily works with the collodion wet plate process and primarily does portraiture. The educator and photographer has spent time during the pandemic getting out and exploring nature. At a local nature area, Donauauen, Hofstätter has spent a lot of time getting to know a family of swans. The swans had a nest and raised five cygnets. Hofstätter started bringing his DSLR with him on his walks to photograph the swans. The swans became used to him, so he could closer...

Researchers propose ‘spaceplates’ to miniaturize lenses by reducing air gaps

The addition of the spaceplate reduces the distance needed between the lens element and the sensor, thus allowing smaller lenses A lot of work has been done using high refractive index glasses, diffraction grating systems and lens element design to reduce the size of camera lenses, but a group of researchers are now targeting the air-space between those elements in a bid to create miniaturized optical systems. The team from the University of Ottawa proposes inserting what they call ‘spaceplates’ into a lens construction to alter the optical...

Leaked details about DJI’s Mini SE reveal it may be DJI’s most affordable drone yet

DJI entered the sub-250g drone arena with the release of its original Mavic Mini drone back in November 2019. Compact, lightweight and easy to use, it’s aimed at beginners. The Mavic Mini had its limits, though, including 2.7K video and WiFi transmission. DJI followed up with the much-improved Mini 2 less than a year later. Now leaks have confirmed that the company is targeting consumers with a Mini SE, which will be available at big box retailers including Walmart. The Mini SE is a throwback to the original, first-generation Mavic Mini...

To the Guy Who Accused Me of Faking My Macro Photo

There’s a long and sordid history behind staging and faking wildlife photography. It’s anything from lying that a zoo photo was taken in the wild, to baiting wildlife, to even killing and then staging the corpse of an animal. I find all of those things awful, especially staging the wildlife in an unnatural way by killing it or harming it to get into a pose they’d never normally do. Which brings me to this comment on one of my recent articles: Here’s the photo he was referring to: NIKON D800E + 105mm f/2.8 @ 105mm, ISO 100, 1/640, f/3.2 This...
