Video: Emmy-winning storm chaser has his drone sucked into a tornado while filming

Yesterday, stormchaser Brian Emfinger managed to capture close-up drone footage of a tornado ripping through a rural area southeast of Yazoo City in Mississipi, United States. While his drone didn’t survive, he did manage to recover some of the video he shot and has since shared it on YouTube. Emfinger, an Emmy-winning storm chaser, aerial videographer and freelance journalist who licenses his work through Live Storms Media, confirmed with DPReview he used a DJI Mavic 2 Pro to capture the footage. Given the conditions, and the fact that...

How to Set Up a MIDI Console for Capture One (or Any Other Photo Software)

Some time ago, I heard about using consoles to control Lightroom. You may have heard about it too, because some of them were reviewed here, here and here on PhotographyLife. This is something that I thought could be fun, but products from Loupedeck or Tangent cost more than $200, which is too expensive for something I wasn’t 100% sure I’d use. So, I decided to purchase a MIDI console – a general term for a controller usually intended for making electronic music – to try it instead. I went with the Behringer X-Touch Mini because of the...

Lava Frenzy: Shooting Fagradalsfjall Volcano in Iceland

[embedded content] A video I made during my visit. Please watch to the end and enjoy. shot using DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Canon 5D Mark IV.Music by DeKibo, licensed through Premiumbeat.comI’d like to thank my good friend Daniel Haussmann for his invaluable help with making this video. A short time ago I returned from Iceland, where I spent two weeks shooting the newly-erupted volcano, which, for lack of a formal name, is called Fagradalsfjall (after a nearby mountain). As an avid volcano photographer, it was quite clear that I had to go, but...

NOSEiD app helps reunite lost dogs with their owners using photos of their noses

Iams wants to use the cameras that nearly everyone has in their pockets to help reunite lost dogs with their owners. The company has launched a new app, NOSEiD, that uses your smartphone’s camera to scan your dog’s nose. If your dog is lost, the scan of its nose acts like a fingerprint, allowing someone to track the lost dog back to you. When a dog runs away or is lost, it can be a traumatic experience for humans and dogs alike. Of NOSEiD, Iams says, ‘The app helps you capture your dog’s unique nose print and guides...

CIPA’s March 2021 data shows positive signs, especially for a maturing mirrorless market

The Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) has released its latest data, detailing the volume and value of digital camera units produced and shipped around the world through March 2021. Before diving into the numbers, it needs to be noted that starting with the data from March 2021, the year-over-year (YoY) numbers should be contextualized with the understanding that March 2020 was the first month where the global economy started feeling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on historical data, production and shipment numbers...

Hubble captures star ‘on the edge of destruction’

Credits: NASA, ESA, STScI To celebrate the 31st birthday of the Hubble space telescope NASA has released a stunning picture a giant star ‘waging a tug-of-war between gravity and radiation to avoid self-destruction’. The star in question is AG Carinae, and it’s shown surrounded by a glowing pink cloud of dust and gas that measures five light-years across. [embedded content] According to NASA the star was created from giant eruptions that occurred 10,000 years ago, and which blew out the star’s outer layers. This left a constant battle between...

How an artist pretended to be a European socialite to capture photos of luxurious NYC apartments

A recent story in Architectural Digest tells the story of how an artist used a little social engineering to capture photographs of some of New York City’s most exclusive and expensive pieces of real estate by claiming to be an incredibly wealthy European socialite. According to AD’s reporting, Hungarian artist Andi Shmied took on the false identity of ‘Gabriella,’ a European socialite in search of a new apartment, to capture images for her limited-edition book Private Views: A High-Rise Panorama of Manhattan. The saga that resulted in...

DJI Air 2S vs Mavic 2 Pro: which should you choose?

The DJI Air 2S addresses one of the most common feature requests from drone users: a 1″-type sensor camera in a consumer-oriented model. Until recently, DJI users either had to make do with smaller sensors, similar to those found in smartphones, or spend more than $1500 for one of DJI’s more expensive prosumer models, such as the Mavic 2 Pro or Phantom 4 Pro. The Air 2S changes that equation, arriving at a price point of $1000. As the newest model in the lineup, it benefits from the latest DJI features and technologies, many of...

Fujifilm GFX 100S review

Introduction GFX100S product photography by Dan Bracaglia & Richard Butler The Fujifilm GFX 100S is the logical next step in the development of the company’s medium format lineup: a 100MP sensor in a single-grip DSLR styled body. But don’t mistake predictability for complacency: the GFX 100S is an awful lot of camera. Inside its comparatively compact body, the GFX 100S carries the 102MP BSI CMOS sensor from the original GFX 100 mounted within a smaller, more powerful image stabilization mechanism. By blending technology from...

Report: TSMC has started production of Apple’s next-generation M-series chipset

Apple’s next-generation M-series chip has entered mass production this month, according to a report from Nikkei Asia. Apple’s M1 chipset was released only five months ago, but the Cupertino-based company isn’t resting on its laurels. Nikkei, citing ‘sources familiar with the matter,’ says the first shipments of the new chipset ‘could begin as early as July for use in MacBooks that are scheduled to go on sale in the second half of this year.’ This news comes just a week after Apple released an entirely redesigned 24” iMac and new iPad Pro...

[embedded content] Photographer Mathieu Stern is most known for his experimentation with weird lenses and cameras, but for his most recent video, he tested out what photographs would look like if you used one of the blackest materials available as a backdrop. The blackest material in the world right now is believed to be Vantablack, a material made by Surrey NanoSystems from randomly-aligned carbon nanotubes that absorbs 99.965% of visible light that hits it. Unfortunately, the artistic use of S-VIS is available exclusively to the studio of...
