Why Do I Photograph Snakes?

Why Do I Photograph Snakes?

It’s a question I hear all the time: “Why in the world do you photograph snakes?” The answer is very simple: I love photography, I love snakes, and I believe snakes deserve more positive attention than they currently receive. My name is Nicholas Hess, and I love wildlife photography, especially when it involves snakes. “Aren’t they dangerous?” “But they are so ugly!” and “I hate snakes!” are all common responses I receive, and could very well be what you are thinking right now! It is not surprising most people react this way given how badly...

The lot of Talbot images was one of 25 lots sold earlier this week as part of Sotheby’s ‘50 Masterworks to Celebrate 50 Years of Sotheby’s Photographs‘ celebration. The auction included work by famous photographers...

Reply to Only one photo per day, now?

As someone who administers several groups, I offer: 1. One per day is a very common requirement in groups going for a higher quality of submissions. While three per day is more common, the quality tends to go down. Personally, I’m OK with it. I usually only post one picture a day, if that. 2. The admin doesn’t owe an explanation. Group rules change all of the time. Admins don’t bother with a lot of communication either because they don’t want to, or it isn’t worth it. People dumping pictures into a group rarely...

Film Fridays: A new shoe mount light meter – meet the Keks EM-01

It’s fairly common to come across a film camera with a busted light meter or one that requires discontinued mercury cell batteries to operate. Likewise, there are plenty of film cameras that don’t offer a built-in light meter, including several popular Leica rangefinder models. Enter: the shoe mount light meter. These little meters offer peace of mind and can help breathe new life into old gear. And our pal, Hamish Gill, had the chance to test the latest competitor in the space: the Keks EM-01 ( $108 + shipping). It features an...
