Hands-on with the Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G

Introduction The Sony FE PZ 16-35mm F4 G is the sixth consumer power zoom for the E-mount system and the second of them to cover the full-frame format. At first glance it’s a pretty compact, semi-bright, constant-aperture wide angle zoom, but there’s more to it the closer you look. And it’s worth putting emphasis on the word ‘consumer’ in that last paragraph, since Sony has also makes a $5,500 power zoom for the pro/cinema market, coincidentally also a 16-35mm but with a T3.1 (which is likely to equate to F2.8)....

D3s or D500

Tom Kielick posted a new topic: I am looking for D3s shooters who have also used a D500 for low light action shots. I’ve always wanted a D3s but as an amateur could never justify the expense. I noticed recently that used prices on MPB have dropped below $675 for bodies in Good condition and shutter counts in the 50 and 60K actuations – a real steal for such an iconic camera. I’ve got a D700 and a selection of FX primes and zooms; also CD cards and EN-EL4a batteries so I am no stranger to FX. I am looking for your thoughts on how the D3s...

When the image was captured, the Juno spacecraft was about 61,000 kilometers (38,000 miles) from Jupiter’s cloud tops when it captured the photo below. The spacecraft’s latitude was about 52 degrees south. The raw image was processed by...

Review: Rotolight AEOS 2 and NEO 3 lights use RGB LEDs to offer loads of creative color options

There are many reasons LED lights are becoming more and more popular with both stills and movie photographers. Initially, the attraction was the much lower power consumption and the significantly lower operating temperatures when compared to traditional continuous lighting. Then came the ability to vary the warmth of the output between cooler-than-daylight to warmer-than-tungsten, which drew plenty of attention too. In the more recent stages of their evolution, LED lights are adding primary-color LEDs to produce a wider range of hues of light...

Nikon Z9 studio scene shows great speed comes at little cost

The Nikon Z9 uses a Stacked CMOS sensor but with a pixel count and base ISO shared with the single layer BSI chip used by the Z7 and Z7 II. That was already one of the best-performing sensors we’ve ever encountered, so our look at the Z9 is more likely to be a question of ‘what’s the cost of the stacked chip’s added speed,’ rather than ‘how much better is the IQ.’ Studio scene Our test scene is designed to simulate a variety of textures, colors and detail types you’ll encounter in the real...
