Utah – America’s Hidden Gem

Have you been to Utah yet? If not, why not? It is, after-all, the most beautiful state… NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S @ 14mm, ISO 64, 1/100, f/4.0 I had no idea what to expect but I fell in love with Utah from the moment I first set foot there. It’s different. The people are very nice, friendly and polite. The towns are beautiful. And the landscape is unlike anything I’ve seen anywhere else. NIKON Z 7 + NIKKOR Z 14-30mm f/4 S @ 26mm, ISO 64, 1/25, f/22.0 Consider the Mesa Arch in Canyonlands for a second. If it’s your first time...

The Sony a7R IV remains the best camera for landscape photography

Published Dec 30, 2020 | dpreview staff Previous 1 Introduction 2 Next Landscape shooters have a unique set of needs and requirements for their gear. On the image quality side of things, a good landscape camera should offer plenty of resolution and lots of dynamic range; from a physical standpoint, it should be weather-sealed and well constructed. Features like in-body stabilization, touch-sensitivity, a tilting LCD and good battery life are also a plus. We’ve rounded up the cameras we think are good options for landscape photography...

Published Jan 2, 2021 | dpreview staff Fujifilm’s updated XF 10-24mm R OIS WR doesn’t come with any optical changes over the older model, but does add weather sealing, improved image stabilization and a physical aperture ring. The most impressive part? The new lens is actually a little lighter than the previous one. We’ve taken advantage of some rare winter sun in the Seattle area and around Puget Sound to see what it can do when paired with Fujifilm’s X-S10. Lensrentals’ most popular gear: Canon once again dominates with Sony, Nikon far behind

It’s the end of the year and that means Lensrentals has once again rounded up a list of the most popular camera bodies, lenses and accessories rented from Lensrentals and LensProToGo customers in 2020. Although this year has been, shall we say, different than most, the macro-level look at the most popular rental gear hasn’t changed much. That said, there are a few interesting trends emerging based on the 2020 data. As it has been since 2017, the Canon 24–70mm F2.8L II lens takes the top spot of the most popular item to fly off...

Gear of the Year: Carey’s choice – Sony a9 II

Photo: Dan Bracaglia We were being out-paced by a semi-truck on a dirt road off an Idaho interstate in a mad gambit to skip an hour’s worth of stop-and-go traffic. As the 18-wheeler rounded a corner far ahead of us, leaving our sight, I felt a bit of humility. Mostly relief. Though if we’d wanted, we could easily have kept up with the truck in the little Subaru we were bouncing around in. It was nice to take comfort in the certainty that every photo I would take on this trip would be reasonably exposed and perfectly focused. But...

2020 in review: the biggest photo news stories of the year

I’ve spent the past two or so weeks attempting to construct a sentence that accurately summarizes the year 2020. While I have a few scattered about in my journal, none of my prose comes close to more aptly encapsulate this year than this quote from Clarke Smith, age 9, from Beverly Hills, Michigan: ‘[It’s] like looking both ways before crossing the street and then getting hit by a submarine.’ Such wisdom from one so young. In this gallery, we’re revisiting some of the stand-out news stories of this wildest of years, selected by the...

Update: Canon patent applications show pistol-grip-style mirrorless camera with pan/tilt and zoom functionality

Editor’s Note: (Wednesday, December 30, 2020 at 1:13 PM): The original version of this article stated these were patents for a DJI Osmo Pro-style gimbal. This coverage was based on the limited information we found at the time. The article has been re-written after poring over the actual patent documents we weren’t aware of at the original time of publishing. A new series of patent applications from Canon shows the company has put a great deal of thought into developing a rather unique pan/tilt mirrorless camera that’s attached to a...

FAA releases final rule on Remote ID and operations over people/night flights

On Monday, December 28th, the Federal Aviation Administration released its ruling on Remote Identification (Remote ID) for drones along with a final rule on flights over people and at night. Coming in roughly a little less than a year after the Notice for Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) on Remote ID was published, this nearly 500-page document, written mostly in legalese, will take awhile to fully unpack. A final rule for Remote ID What is certain for now, thanks to an Executive Summary provided by the FAA, is that a highly contentious part of the...

Patent shows Canon may be developing a DJI Osmo Pro-like gimbal

According to a filed patent, Canon appears to be working on an all-in-one gimbal and camera device, similar to the discontinued DJI Osmo Pro. In the patent diagrams, first seen on Twitter via user OsitaLV, the prospective Canon product comprises a handle, a rear display, gimbal, controls, a camera sensor and a lens mount. On top of the camera area, there’s also a hot shoe. Near the hot shoe is some sort of a switch, which Josh Spires of Drone DJ speculates could be a toggle switch for stabilization or as a release for the lens mount....

The Overlooked Technique of Image Averaging

Almost all photographers know about panoramas and HDRs. Most also know about focus stacking. But how often do you hear photographers talk about a fourth method of blending photos together – image averaging? Although image averaging has picked up a bit more popularity in recent years, it’s still not especially well-known. That’s a shame; depending on what subjects you photograph, image averaging can extend your shooting capabilities significantly. Let me demonstrate. Table of Contents What Is Image Averaging? As the name implies, image...

Nikon Z6 II vs Canon EOS R6 – which is best for you?

Canon and Nikon dominated the DSLR market for around two decades but the move to mirrorless saw Sony gain a significant foothold in the full-frame space before the former ‘Big Two’ weighed in. The second-generation full-frame mirrorless cameras from both brands are hugely capable though, so in the absence of an update from Sony, the Canon EOS R6 and Nikon Z6 II are the midrange models to beat. But which is right for...

How one drone pilot got slapped with $182,000 in fines from the FAA

A drone pilot from Philidelphia, Pennsylvania, was slapped with a $182,000 fine from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The individual, whose identity remains anonymous, incurred this massive fee after conducting at least 26 separate flights that violated Federal Aviation Regulations between December 2019 and August 2020. The story made its rounds in the news earlier in the month. Recently, respected aviation attorney Jonathan Rupprecht, who was granted access to a copy of the penalty letter, went more in depth on the nature of the...

Roger Cicala: Understanding field curvature for fun and profit

When deciding which 35mm lens to buy, what do you want to know? How sharp it is? How it handles? How much it costs? I want to know what its field curvature looks like. (Spoiler: the plot on the right is from the little guy.) I’m not a fan of lens testing purely for the purpose of winning pissing contests. I am, however, a great fan of lens testing for learning how to best use a lens. There are a few tests I find particularly useful, and the single most important one is field curvature. Field Curvature (in metrology speak MTF v Field v...

Introduction Studio product photography by Dan Bracaglia The Zeiss ZX1 is the first-ever digital camera to come with Adobe Lightroom Mobile built-in, encouraging you to shoot, edit and upload images from a single device. It has a 37.4MP full-frame sensor, a fixed 35mm F2 lens and the largest screen we’ve ever seen on a modern digital camera at 4.34″ (11cm) diagonal. It’s also a camera that I wondered if I’d ever see; it was announced way back in 2018, and there was a stretch of more than a year and a half where we...
