Lensrentals celebrates the Canon 5D Mark III’s 10th birthday by putting it head-to-head against the Fujifilm GFX 100S

The Canon 5D Mark III turns 10 this month and Lensrentals is celebrating the anniversary by comparing the classic Canon DSLR against a modern, top-of-the-line camera to see just how far cameras have come in the last decade. The competition? The Fujifilm GFX 100S. There’s no question which camera is better. New cameras come out with better image sensors, faster shooting speeds and more powerful chips every year. The GFX 100S ticks all these boxes and then some. However, is performance really that important? Does the GFX 100S, with its...

Apple Mac Studio review: The Apple desktop we’ve been waiting for

The new Mac Studio is the mid-range standalone desktop computer that many Apple users have been asking for. All product photography by DL Cade After many months of speculation and some very accurate leaks, Apple finally unveiled the “professional Mac Mini” that many of us have been waiting for. It’s about three times thicker and several times more powerful than the Mac mini, and it’s called the Mac Studio. Released alongside the M1 Ultra Apple Silicon SOC that sports 20 CPU cores, up to 64 GPU cores, and up to 128GB of...

Apple Studio Display review: An excellent monitor at a steep price

The Apple Studio Display is an excellent 5K monitor with a bunch of extra features that you won’t find in most of the 27-inch monitors on the market. All product photography by DL Cade The Studio Display – Apple’s new 27-inch, 5K monitor that was released alongside the new Mac Studio desktop – is one of the most difficult displays I’ve had to review. On the one hand, the price tag is sky-high for a 27-inch 5K panel that ‘only’ promises coverage of the DCI-P3 gamut and is basically incompatible with Widows. On the...

Lensbaby Soft Focus II includes an adjustable aperture & promises creative photo fun

Lensbaby has announced the Soft Focus II optic, a new 50mm lens in Lensbaby’s Optic Swap System. The Soft Focus II is a new-and-improved version of one of the earliest members of the Optic Swap System. The new version improves upon its predecessor by adding a 12-blade manually adjustable internal aperture to the drop-in magnetic aperture system. The lens has an F2.5-22 aperture range. When shot at its faster apertures, the lens offers a narrow, flat field of focus and produces soft, dreamy images. The center region becomes much sharper...

Video: The Slow Mo Guys burst bubbles at 50,000 frames per second

The Slow Mo Guys are back at it with more slow motion video. This time, the crew have recorded popping a giant bubble at 50,000 frames per second. How ‘giant’ are we talking? The bubble is large enough for Slow Mo Guys team member Dan to be completely encased. Gavin and Daniel started recording at 1,000 fps using the Phantom Flex4K. The Flex4K is designed for cinematic applications, so while it doesn’t offer the same speed capabilities as some of Phantom’s other high speed cameras, the footage is 4K and looks...

Is the Mac Studio the right computer for your photo or video workflow?

Last week, Apple announced the Mac Studio, a new desktop computer lineup that more or less splits the difference between the company’s existing Mac Mini and Mac Pro desktops. While the future of the Mac Pro lineup remains uncertain as Apple continues its transition to its proprietary silicon, the Mac Studio, at least on paper, seems ready to deliver on the needs of creators of all kinds. But what Mac Studio build will be best for your needs? And do you even need a Mac Studio at all? We’ll try to answer all that and more below. While...

What You Should Know About Prime Lenses

Camera lenses can be divided into two broad groups: prime lenses and zoom lenses. Prime lenses, which offer a single focal length and can’t zoom in or out, may seem to be inherently less useful than zoom lenses, but that’s not necessarily the case. Prime lenses can offer a wide range of benefits, and in this guide, we’ll break down what you should know about prime lenses and why you should consider adding prime lenses to your bag. Table of Contents What Are Prime Lenses? Prime lenses are best understood by looking at the difference between a...

Cosina announces $780 Voigtländer Nokton 23mm F1.2 for Fujifilm X-mount cameras

Cosina has been on a roll the past few weeks, having launched a collection of lenses back in February and a pair of 40mm F2.8 primes for Leica cameras yesterday. Today, the company continues its release with the announcement of a new Voigtländer Nokton 23mm F1.2 manual focus lens for Fujifilm X-mount camera systems. The manual lens, which offers a ~35mm full-frame equivalent field of view (and F1.8 equivalent aperture), is constructed of 10 elements in six groups, including one double-sided aspherical element and two low-dispersion elements....

To a degree this is understandable, its most prominent features – subject recognition AF, a range of multi-shot computational modes and a (nominally) 20MP sensor – sound familiar. But it’s a camera based on a Stacked CMOS...

Getting to know Sony’s trio of compact 24mm, 40mm and 50mm G prime lenses

The 24mm F2.8 G, 40mm F2.5 G, and 50mm F2.5 G have a lightweight design that makes them convenient for casual and on-the-move photographers. Their nearly identical size also makes them a good choice for gimbal shooters; all three lenses weigh roughly 170g and share the same 49mm filter thread. See them in action as Dan puts them to use on a shoot for a high-end sports car. This is...

Micro Four Thirds vs APS-C As Someone Who Uses Both

What’s better: micro four thirds or APS-C? Are these two sensor formats at odds? Could any question spark an internet argument more quickly than comparing sensor sizes? There is no doubt that there are advantages and disadvantages of each. Today, I would like to talk about why I (gasp) choose to shoot with both formats. And perhaps surprisingly, my reasons have very little to do with sensor size. Table of Contents A Little Bit About the Formats Of course, the most obvious difference between APS-C and micro four thirds is sensor size. You can...

So far in this series, I’ve talked about compositional elements, their weights and how to use their properties to balance the composition by imagining a balance of torques around the middle axis of an image. I also discussed balancing of negative space, the perception of subject direction and the lead room given to match this direction. I ended the last article with the image below, and asked the readers to guess what I dislike about it. Let’s have another look: The snowy Goðafoss Waterfall, Iceland Canon 5D3, Tamron 24-70mm F2.8,...

What to Photograph When There’s Too Much to Photograph

Last year, I wrote an article about finding subjects to photograph when there isn’t anything obvious to shoot. That’s a common situation in photography: not enough good subjects. Sometimes, however, the opposite is true, where there’s an abundance of good subjects and not enough time to photograph them all. It sounds like a good problem to have, and of course it’s better than the alternative. But it’s still a problem that can lead to missed opportunities and a lack of success from your shoot. I’ve had my share of failures in promising...
