Motorola’s new Moto X Style carries Sony’s IMX 230 1/2.3-inch sensor

Sales of image sensors helped push Sony to triple its net profit after the second�quarter this year (Sony’s first quarter) compared to the same period last year, up to 82.4 billion Yen. Sales of Devices, the category containing Sony’s sensor business, rose 35% year-on-year, which Sony attributes in part to higher demand of mobile products containing its sensors. Also responsible for the jump is a healthy trade in Playstation 4�games.

As detailed in Sony’s latest financial report, its Imaging Products and Services business saw in a modest sales increase of 3.5% year-on-year thanks to favorable exchange rates and�a shift to more expensive camera models.�

Earlier this year Sony announced its intention to branch off its audio and visual business into a separate subsidiary. At the same time, the company re-affirmed its commitment to sensor production and development. Since then we’ve seen the introduction of its stacked sensor design to the compact camera class in the Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 IV and Cyber-shot RX10 II.
