Capturing Busy Little Ones: Forget the Perfect Pose and Get Photos You Truly Love

A Post By: Melinda Smith If you have ever tried to get a three year old to sit still for longer than a nanosecond you know what a challenge it can be to get that “perfect” photo. Well, I’m going to be real here, who wants that perfect photo anyway? Okay, I know you may, but maybe I can convince you to let that go. My favorite photos are always the true ones; the ones that make you smile when you look at them, or maybe even cry a tear or two. Sure, it’s nice to get that beautiful portrait, but which photo is going to help you truly...

Flickr launches image marketplace initiative

Recently we have seen several photo sharing sites venture into the photo licensing and stock image business, for example 500px with its Prime program and EyeEm with its Marketplace and a cooperation with Getty Images. Getty itself updated its iOS apps in order to prepare itself better for the growing competition in the mobile stock photo market.  However, long before smartphone images were accepted by stock agencies Yahoo-owned Flickr started its own cooperation with Getty via the Flickr Collection, allowing its members to monetize...

Selling The Value Of The Web To Small-Town Clients

Selling The Value Of The Web To Small-Town Clients By Trevan Hetzel July 29th, 2014 BusinessClientsMarketing 1 Comment Selling your services as a freelancer or a small shop is tough enough as it is. Selling to a small-town business that might not even see the need for a website adds an extra level of difficulty in turning a profit. I’ve provided web design services to small-town businesses for the past few years, having had many happy outcomes, but also a lot of negative experiences from which I’ve learned hard lessons. One of the most...

How Limitations Led To My Biggest App Store Success and Failure

How Limitations Led To My Biggest App Store Success and Failure By Ben Johnson July 28th, 2014 AppsCase StudiesiOS 4 Comments Look at your calendar. If you’re anything like me, all you see are meetings, places to go, things to do, people to meet and not a lot of white space. Few people love their calendar. So, we set out to change that, and we learned a lot in the process. Our app is an iPhone app that flips your calendar upside down and lets you focus on the free time in your day, instead of all the busy time. The app itself has been...

Product Review – Dixie Grip: Rotating, handheld, or mounted hotshoe grip

A Post By: Phillip VanNostrand What is it? What does it do? What’s it good for? This piece of equipment replaces the light stand with something much more flexible – your hands! Yes, you can mount the grip onto a light stand, but the best part is having the mobility and freedom of using it with your hands. As far as I know, there is no other thing out there that does that, exactly like this. And it holds an umbrella. It’s an ergonomic solution to the mobile problem of traveling light and easy. As my mentor was saying, his assistant was...

The Only Three Lenses You Need for Travel Photography

The Only Three Lenses You Need for Travel Photography

A Post By: Phillip VanNostrand The only three lenses you need for travel photography anywhere in the world are a fisheye lens, a 50mm, and a 135mm (or similar telephoto). You can agree and finish this article right here, or you can read on to see exactly why I would choose only these three lenses to take with me anywhere in the world. Night shot from atop a bridge in Moscow, using the Canon fisheye 15mm f/2.8 Before I say anything else, the fisheye I have in mind has an aperture of f/2.8, the 50mm has an aperture of f/1.4, and the 135 has an...

Ten Go-to Editing Tips for Using Photoshop

A Post By: Sarah Hipwell The recent release of Adobe Photoshop Creative Cloud (CC) 2014 (which is the 15th release of the product) got me thinking about my own workflow. Photoshop is an amazing piece of software. I have been using it commercially since version 5. However, I don’t necessarily think the latest version is the best one. I’ve just recently upgraded to CS6 and I’m loving it but I can’t see myself going the CC route just yet, as it doesn’t suit my business model. The beauty of this software is the power that it can bring...

J: I’m quite familiar with NoScript, and I use it almost all of the time. Adblock doesn’t work that way. And the fact that you bring it up here tells me you aren’t real familiar with it. This problem of misdirection to GearCrap is misdirection to the wrong effing website upon sign-in; that’s significantly different than an ad in an annoying location. Also why should I have to use a a PC? Is it the year 1997? Does this website only work one way and only with one OS? Do you not know that Firefox, including Noscript, also...

Canon introduces inexpensive PowerShot SX400 IS and SX520 HS superzooms

Canon has introduced a pair of budget-friendly superzooms: the PowerShot SX400 IS and SX520 HS. These cameras have 24-720mm and 24-1008mm equivalent lenses, respectively. The SX400 sports a 16MP CCD and 720p video, while the SX520 uses a CMOS sensor (likely BSI) that can produce Full HD movies. Canon claims that autofocus performance has been improved on both models compared with their predecessors. You’ll be able to pick up the SX400 IS in August for $249.99, with the SX520 HS following in September for $399.99.  Jump to: Press...

Pelican Imaging releases light field photos from its mobile imaging array

Pelican Imaging has released a set of re-focusable pictures taken with its light field camera for smartphones. Light field technology is back in the headlines, following Lytro’s latest offering, the Illum. Pelican Imaging, though, is taking a slightly different approach from Lytro: instead of placing an array of microlenses between the sensor and the main lens, Pelican uses an array of main lenses – each with a sensor behind it. And while the idea of a multi-camera array is not particularly new (a Stanford research group*...

In pictures: Restoration of Boeing’s first 747 ‘jumbo jet’

Posted by on 29th, Jul, 2014 in Blog | 0 comments

He is obviously in Germany. I’m sure he meant to say that it is sad that it is not in, instead of into, Germany. Obviously he does want to see it but seeing that it is an American plane, a Boeing, and not an Airbus, it is rightly located in America, away from his easy access. Wasn’t hard to figure out. I don’t know why you felt the need to say that Airbus is not German when obviously Germany is a part of it. Not understanding your irony comment. What does Northrop Grumman have to do with the topic or anything said? That...

When to Trick Your Camera to get a Good Exposure

A Post By: Mike Newton I bought the Sony A7 camera recently and have been taking it out quite a bit to get a feel for it. My wife is starting a fashion blog so I thought I would take her out for a fashion shoot at the beach. I was shooting a high-contrast scene and realized. . . The camera doesn’t always know what’s best Your camera always has the best intentions, but it doesn’t always get it right. Sometimes the sensor will think you want to expose a scene one way when you actually want it to expose it another. I’ll show you an...
