Hands On With The Sigmund Freud Typeface: Making A Font For Your Shrink

Hands On With The Sigmund Freud Typeface: Making A Font For Your Shrink By Harald Geisler June 2nd, 2014 FontsInspirationTypography 3 Comments Handwritten text shows a personal side of its author, a side that is not easy to put into words and that contrasts with the standardized look of digital communication. This contrast and “aura” is perhaps what makes handwritten fonts so popular. As a typographer, I love handwriting, and in this article I’d like to share a hands-on overview of my creation process of a handwritten font. Over the...

Is Visiting the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley Worth It?

A Post By: James Brandon I probably won’t ever go again. That’s how bad it’s gotten. Not unless something changes. If you’re into travel and landscape photography you’ve likely either been to or have on your bucket list the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley National Park. I’ve been twice now, which is really a lot harder than it sounds if you haven’t been before. In this article, I want to go over my current thoughts on this peculiar and incredible place and the impact that tourists and photographers are having on it. I think...

Step By Step How to Make Panoramic HDR Images

A Post By: Barry J Brady Panoramic HDR image of Coal Harbour – Vancouver, Canada I am convinced that digital photography has changed so many aspects of photography forever.  HDR and photo stitching are just two of those aspects. In the film era you could achieve a lot in the darkroom with blending, dodging and burning, but not to the extent that HDR allows us to achieve now. Photostitching has also allowed us to produce images that were not possible a few years ago. In the days of film, panoramic images were possible, but required a camera...

Full speed ahead: Sony a6000 Review

Posted by on 3rd, Jun, 2014 in Blog | 0 comments

For me, the major con is that it does not have a microphone jack for higher end microphones. I actually like the fact that it does not have a touch screen. I have used touch screens before and I always found them irritating. While, I have only handled this camera briefly, it seems to be a solid camera. If Sony were to offer an A7000, I would like to see a MIC jack added and possibly internal 4HD. But, I am not that big into making videos, so the latter point is that that crucial to me. Perhaps, they can take out the AA filter too. That said,...

Nikon sets aside 1.8 billion yen to cover D600 warranty repairs

Posted by on 3rd, Jun, 2014 in Blog | 0 comments

Loyal D600 owners insisted that the “problem” was imaginary or exagerated by Canonite trolls. One could clean the sensor or, by using the camera very little, never see a sludge problem at all. Loyal owners never whined or sent their units for repair or replacement. Loyal owners were chagrined when Nikon “went wobbly” and offered the D610 with a “fix” for the problem. Loyal owners have the Nikon emblem and five stars tatooed on their head, chest, biceps, and behind. The Marines borrowed the Semper Fe motto...

Nokia Lumia 1020 used in medical research

Histopathology is the examination of body tissue and not a subject we usually write much about on Dpreview Connect. However, last month a scientific paper was published in the Histopathology journal, in which the authors, Dr. Mark Li-cheng Wu and Dr. John Paul Graff, describe how they’ve used a Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone to identify a type of bacteria. The Nokia Blog sat down with Dr. Wu and Dr. Graff, who are experts in the field of photomicrography, to find out more about how and why the Lumia device was used.  In...

In iOS 8, Apple brings welcome refinements to Photos app

As we’ve come to expect, Apple is using its annual developers’ conference in San Francisco to announce new versions of its desktop and mobile operating systems. Along with a host of refinements in iOS 8 is a revamped Photos app, with improved native retouching options, better search, more complete iCloud integration and support for third party retouching apps as ‘extensions’. In iOS 7, photo retouching was effectively limited to redeye removal and a one touch ‘auto-enhance’ options. One-shot,...

Pocket movie maker? We examine the Sony RX100 III’s video mode

Posted by on 2nd, Jun, 2014 in Blog | 0 comments

Well Jay, That was a boring rant, did you get to spew enough cliches? You seem a bit confused. Where have I said much about any studio shots posted at DPR? I have said a few things over the years, but I don’t pay a lot of attention to studio shots. “pixel peeping”? Hardly, and you can’t really cite an example. I do look at shadows, for noise. Now, looking at these Sony RX100m3 studio shots (raws) I see why some think the focus is odd. Noise looks to be about like the RX10, but it’s hard to tell since only...
