Getting Sharper Images – an Understanding of Focus Modes

A Post By: Jake Hicks The longer you shoot, the larger the repertoire of subjects and assignments you photograph becomes. You start off photographing flowers in the garden, your neighbour’s dog, your sister’s kids, your friend’s wedding and then before you know it you’re doing product shots for your friend’s new company. All this happens over time and there is one pretty fundamental skill that must remain paramount throughout out your process, properly focused images. Sure we’ve all been there, we’ve all taken that shot once in...

When is Altering Your Image Acceptable? A Debate on Post-processing

A Post By: Gavin Hardcastle Have you ever used Photoshop’s ‘Content Aware Fill’ tool to get rid of some unsightly object in your otherwise perfect image? Have you ever cropped your image in order to give it a more pleasing composition? I know I’ve done both on many an occasion and I feel no guilt or remorse whatsoever. The Plastic Bag You Didn’t Notice Here’s an example of a shot I took at Monument Valley in Utah. The foreground was completely covered in litter, so while editing I decided to cut out the more obvious offenders like...

Olympus updates PEN E-P5 with electronic shutter ‘0 sec anti-shock’

Olympus has updated the firmware of its PEN E-P5 mirrorless camera, introducing improved Wi-Fi remote control functionality and a ‘0 sec’ anti-shock setting. The latter should help prevent blurred images at certain shutter speeds – our main gripe when we reviewed the camera. There’s also an update for the Stylus 1 enthusiast compact with similarly-enhanced Wi-Fi control. Both updates are available to download and install now, using the Olympus Digital Camera updater program. The new Wi-Fi features also require the...

Finally, proof that the internal commander mode was flakier than a good croissant. I can’t find much to fault in the third party battery wars. I owned a few in D2X days, and they all died of various causes at about 1 year or so, where the Nikon batteries soldiered on heartily. I also know of several people who had camera damage or charger damage (in two cases, fires) with third party batteries. The system complexity of today’s cameras is so massive that the odds are against smooth integration of third party batteries. For really...

Unique Flower Photography Using Multiple Exposures

A Post By: Bruce Wunderlich Most of the new cameras from both Nikon and Canon now have the capability to create multiple exposures. The technique is rather simple to set up, but the results can be both unlimited and unpredictable. So try using this feature to create some unique floral images. Set-up Select Multiple Exposure from your camera’s menu. The default option on this setting is, of course, OFF. Select the ON option. Some cameras will give you the option here for ON (series) which will keep the option on until you turn it off or ON...
